Got an itty bitty fandom that you would really love to read fic from, or write fic for?

Are you willing to write 1000 words for someone else's itty bitty fandom?

Then yuletide is for you! And right now is the time to nominate the fandoms you're most interested in. There are restrictions to what counts, but the mods give you a chance to make your case if your fandom is borderline, or a subset of a larger fandom.

On dreamwidth you can follow the admin account for announcements like this one that has this year's schedule and the rules for people who defaulted last year and want to get back in the mix.

https://yuletide-admin.dreamwidth.org/114090.html

You can also follow the community dreamwidth, which has useful posts like the promo post, where you can inveigle others into looking at your favorites, or the coordination station where people list what they've nominated and request nominations they couldn't fit in.

https://yuletide.dreamwidth.org/94243.html

And if you're on Discord, there's a very active community there, which not only works for Yuletide, but also does a lot of promotion for other exchanges.

This is the placeholder until I update it.

Sorry.

ARGH! Meant to write last night and fell asleep.

Um. General do not wants: pederasty, non-consensual sex (except off screen as past hurt for current comfort), body fluid kinks, good characters being evil. Check my previous letters, where I was a lot more specific and eloquent at times about what I'm fussy over. dyw letter tag should do it.

General wants. More of what I found in the canon is good. I tend to only want AUs of the coffeeshop sort after I've had a glut of canonish fanfic. Fixit fic is about as AU as I go for small 'verses. That said, crossovers are fun.

For the things I asked for,

With the New Avengers my past letters pretty much cover it. Funtimes with all three of them is my hearts desire, but otherwise something that focuses on Gambit.

Dr. Syn, I'm hoping for the atmosphere. I swear that show with its horses and boots and scary mask is the basis for everything that comes to mind when I'm reading about that era, but I really don't remember the plot much. Smugglers vs authorities... Anyway, go for it.

The People. What I love is the feel of the stories. My favorite one is the people who catch a baby after a spaceship crashes, but I'll reread all of them. Interactions between the People and the rest of us are good.

Yesterday: Loved the movie, think they skimmed over the possible consequences. Does Jack get a chance to meet the other Beatles? What happens with kids being born into this slightly different world. Do they remember?

The Toll-Gate. Think I covered that one. Hope you love all the fun characters that didn't make the list too, but if you just want Nell and Jack riding across the countryside slice of life I'm good. Or alternate pov from Nell's side!

Babette's feast. Again, I love the feel of the film. Give me more! Elaborate on the recipes with the smells and textures and tastes that film can't convey.

Thank you!
rabidsamfan: samwise gamgee, I must see it through (quest)
Hi!

I hope you'll have fun writing for me this year! I'm pretty easy to please, barring the squicks I've mentioned at the bottom of this letter, as long as I can recognize the characters I've asked for. I love slice of life, alternating viewpoints, fluff, "what comes next", fix it fics, kidfics, gen, sex or violence up to PG levels, hurt/comfort (heavy on the comfort), crack taken seriously, crack taken to the extreme, happy endings, character studies, alternate viewpoint of canon, missing scenes, alternate universes of the "diverging from canon" kind, and stories similar to what canon provides. and, well, if you go through my past letters you'll get a fairly good idea of just how catholic my tastes can be. I only ask that you remember I'm asking for these fandoms because there isn't much out there, so I'd rather not have AUs where you stick the characters into a different scenario, like high school or a coffee shop. Well, maybe the Mod Squad. Undercover. But, you know, still cops...

Anyway.

This year I went to the pinch hit list, which was a bit nervous making, but I got back two stories and a drabble!

The first story was for the Wild Wild West, and the second story (and the drabble) were both for Minions.

Excerpts from “Woman in Red”, the Unofficial Biography of Scarlet Overkill (1170 words) by Chibifukurou

Additional Tags: Epistolary, Character Study
Summary:

Most of what we know about Scarlet Overkill’s early life has been extrapolated through hospital records and stories from neighbors and long time residents of the small town where Scarlet was born and raised. During her active career Scarlet claimed to be an orphan. Whether this was because she was embarrassed to have come from Non-villainous parents or because she felt it gave her a better backstory this writer doubts we'll ever know. (Due to the fact that the family has been in hiding since the freak volcano eruption which gold plated the Overton family home the day of Scarlet and Herb Overkill’s wedding)

In some ways this was a very good year for writing, and in others, not so much. Despite my thinking I'd get active on LJ again, I kind of failed at blogging. But I did do some writing, and the Yuletide reveal tradition has nudged me into posting once more.

If you go on AO3, you'll see that as of January 1st I posted Rules of Silence. I actually wrote it the year before for Holmestice, but it's pertinent, because the fandom was Lyndsay Faye's Sherlockian masterpiece Dust and Shadow. Lyndsay, who is one of the Baker Street Babes, found it, read it, and liked it. *whew*, and she recommended me to David Marcum, who was putting together an anthology of traditional pastiches with MX Publishing. He knew me from my fanfic on ff.n, and invited me to write a story for the book. Which I did. It's in the first volume of the anthology, and since I used my real name I'll invite you to go deduce which one is mine. (I promised not to post the story anywhere else for at least a year, since the proceeds of the anthology go to charity.)

I also got invited to write an essay analyzing an episode for a book about the New Avengers. So two publications in one year!

Back to AO3, where the fanfiction lives, I posted an ancient Trapper John, M.D fic that used to be on my attempt on a geocities page.

Then I noodled around for most of the year adding bits to Clipped Wings, a Tony Stark/Martin Crieff story wherein I crash a plane and it isn't Martin's fault. (I'm currently trying to get going again with Grounded, the sequel, which is over 10,000 words and hasn't even got to lunchtime yet in the same day. I'm having fun, but I admit, it's not exactly exciting.)

Then come October, when my work headaches were getting a bit better, Yuletide came along. This year I managed to sign up, and I issued my annual Yuletide Madness Drabble Initiative invitation, too.

***

My assignment was a story for Riptide. My favorite character has always been Murray, but my recipient really wanted Nick and Cody. And it had been too long since I'd watched the episodes, so a marathon canon review was in order. (Gosh, they blew up a lot of stuff on that show!) I don't remember what got me thinking about earthquakes, but once the niggling of an idea came along, I did some internet research and found a major quake shortly after the show went off the air. It centered in "Whittier Narrows", and that led me to Turnbull Canyon, which has all sorts of delicious spooky rumors about it. I started writing with just the dialogue, wanting to get the voices right before tossing in descriptions, and as it turned out, the dialogue carried most of the story alone, so I wound up worrying if it would seem pretentious, but fortunately, the person I wrote it for really liked it.

I also had an idea almost straight away for a story about The Martian. Well, the same idea as a lot of people. I wanted to write about what happens after the end of the book. I actually wrote the first 400 words before assignments came out! So when I had time to come back to it I looked for Yuletide letters from people who also liked the fandom and found the perfect person to finish the story for. It's not the best Yuletide story for the fandom (because there were some FANTASTIC stories for both book and movie versions of The Martian this year) but I'm still pleased with it.

I also snagged a pinch hit. It had been sitting forlorn and unloved for a couple of days, and one of the prompts was a simple "what happens next" for a book I knew we had at the library where I work. It isn't my usual sort of read, but I like the challenge of writing for new fandoms, and as it turns out, it's the longest story I wrote for Yuletide. Mostly because the book left so much dangling that I couldn't resist tying up a few loose ends. Much to my surprise, the original character I threw in to ask the questions a reader unfamiliar with the fandom might ask ended up hijacking my miniscule plot. But in a good way!

By then it was December, and I hadn't done a single drabble. Luckily, I had two weeks vacation and I snuck in a bunch of them in the evenings when everyone else had gone to bed since I was two hours off their schedule. By then the prompts were available, so I just trolled through the fandoms I knew fairly well, looking for things which enticed me. I now have drabbles in 108 fandoms! (Some of which, I admit, aren't very good drabbles, but I tried.) I wrote 21 of them, as follows:

*whew* Now for 2016!
rabidsamfan: samwise gamgee, I must see it through (quest)
It's that time of year again, and I've written so much in the optional details I'm not sure this isn't gilding the lily. But the possibility of treats is too much to ignore, so please, dear writer, be patient with my excessive burbling. Truth is, I love all of these characters, and I'll be happy with anything that gets the people pretty much right, but please take a gander at my DNWs at the bottom of this letter.

So, for Yuletide I wrote one longer fic, one short piece that wasn't a drabble and a bunch of drabbles. Only one of which saw very many hits, but that's yuletide. Small fandoms for the win!

So in order of getting them posted: )

I must must must remember to ask for the Mod Squad next year. Julie ships Pete and Linc. (Whether or not Pete and Linc feel that way is optional.) Somebody could have a whole lot of fun with that one!

And yes, I still remember that MAD magazine already did!
rabidsamfan: samwise gamgee, I must see it through (quest)
Fair Warning... I'm pretty much composing this as I go along making requests, so you can expect it to get edited a few times over the course of the week. But I wanted the link for the request thingy. ETA It should be just about right now. I think...

First of all, thank you for writing for me! I ramble a lot in this letter, and propose a number of possibilities, but if you've got an idea that doesn't appear here, that's all to the good. I say "I want" a lot, but it isn't exclusive. The things I don't want will probably come clear as you go along. My earlier DYW letters are probably more coherent...

In general, for these fandoms I would like you to stay close to the canon. No AUs of the coffeeshop or high school kind, please. There just isn't enough fanfic of the ordinary sort to satisfy my cravings as it is. Taking the canon and diverging from the timeline is okay, though. I like crossovers, generally, and only request that you choose something which either blends well with what I've asked for or is completely gone over to the crackfic side of the force.

Remember last year, when I wrote about fifty drabbles for Yuletide? Well, I don't know if I'll manage quite as many this year, but I'm going to try again. If you want to join in the fun you don't have to do Yuletide proper, just write drabbles (real ones!) for treats.

And then there was Yuletide... )
rabidsamfan: samwise gamgee, I must see it through (quest)
I didn't get a story, because I signed up late, although I did get two lovely drabbles in Madness.

I wrote a ridiculous amount though. Two full length pinch hits (one of which was done in ten drabbles), a full length treat, a 250 word short for Madness and 44 drabbles.

Yes, that's right. 44. And all that in nearly as many fandoms as stories.

Do you know what you get when you write in that many fandoms? Kudos, that's what. Over three hundred of them in two days. I think I'm going to puff up like the bullfrog in the song and explode with foolish pride.

Okay

Picked up pinch hit. Wrote a begging letter in hopes of a story back. Now I've GOT to get cracking.

rabidsamfan: samwise gamgee, I must see it through (quest)
Please feel free to look at older yuletide letters under the tag, but for the fandoms I hastily chose from this year's tagset, here are some notes.

Brat Farrar - Josephine Tey
I'd love to know what happens after the book. Or possibly see what happens in the book from Jane's side of things.

Sherlock Holmes (US TV 1954)
This is my comfort version of Sherlock Holmes. I love this young, playful Holmes and his strong, if somewhat gullible Watson! Anything echoing that would be great, but there are a couple of episodes which are a bit darker, and times when there's real danger. Exploring those would be good. I'm a sucker for hurt comfort.

Hardy Boys - Franklin W. Dixon
Frank was always my favorite. Get him into trouble!

The Secret Garden - Frances Hodgson Burnett
Rereading this lately I realized that Martha is really the first person to treat Mary like a human being. I'd love to see a story where Mary realizes it too. Perhaps Archibald Craven decides to make everything grand and Martha is reduced to a scullery maid? But a focus on Martha would be nice.

Thank you.

ARgh!
