Senator Dick Durbin (D-IL) is conducting an opinion poll to determine what type of public health care option (if any) the American people most vigorously support. Please take a moment to participate:

http://www.DickDurbin.com/PublicOptionPoll

There's a lot of bullshit flying around Washington about what We The People want on this issue. The only way our voices can be heard is if we actually SPEAK UP.

(My addition here: the poll does include a way to say you don't want the public option, so it's not just for folks on my tip of the wing. The choices are:

1. fully funded all fifty states
2. Opt Out for states
3. Opt In for states
4. Triggers
5. No public option.

It asks for your email address, name and zipcode and will, naturally, add you to their email lists, but I found it very simple to unsubscribe again.

Pass this along to friends and family. Our legislators need to hear from us!)

Have you read this thing? What's with section 8? No review? One guy, picked by Bush, gets to dole out a ton of money and he's not accountable to nobody? 2000 bucks a piece for every man woman and child in the country?

And section 9? Everything expires except the important parts?

You want to bail out mortgages, okay. Guarantee every flipping mortgage in the country held by owner-occupied housing. Save the little guys. For rental units, save the small holders who rent at reasonable rates. *then* if there's money left over, give some to the banks that screwed up in the first place.

And absolutely every company who gets bailed should have its stock frozen and no bonuses for any employee until the debt is paid back.

If you save smallholders, they should have to pay back the mortgages at one third of their income at a low interest rate till its paid off. And it goes down as bad credit, so they can't borrow more. I'm all for responsibility.

But this thing, this is a piece of malarky:

LEGISLATIVE PROPOSAL FOR TREASURY AUTHORITY

TO PURCHASE MORTGAGE-RELATED ASSETS

why yes, I did write my senators, why do you ask? )

Sec. 8. Review.

Decisions by the Secretary pursuant to the authority of this Act are non-reviewable and committed to agency discretion, and may not be reviewed by any court of law or any administrative agency.

Sec. 9. Termination of Authority.

The authorities under this Act, with the exception of authorities granted in sections 2(b)(5), 5 and 7, shall terminate two years from the date of enactment of this Act.

Obama voted to pass the FISA bill WITH the telecomm immunity provision intact. Move on wants him to promise he'll investigate when he's president. I say feh. He already promised he wouldn't vote for telecomm immunity and THAT's gone down the tubes.

I'm switching my voter registration to the Greens. At least Cynthia McKinney understands that I'd rather live with the threat of a possible terrorist attack once every few years than without my civil liberties every single morning of my life.

http://www.runcynthiarun.org/

If the Democrats want to prove that they'll hold any president responsible for his duty to the constitution, they need to get impeachment out of committee and on the debating floor.

Actions speak louder than words.

ETA I'm not committed to voting for McKinney, or anyone else. I'm just sick and tired of the Democrat leadership saying "oh, sure, Bush has violated the Constitution but we're not going to hold him responsible for it because we have to look like we're tough on terrorism."

Impeachment. On the table. I do have other choices.

The president wants to sell off a lot of the public lands, forest lands, and has put together a list that includes well-loved sites and lots of errors.

The comment period goes to May 1st, so write to

USDA Forest Service
SRS comments
Lands 4S
1400 Independence Ave., SW
Mailstop 1124
Washington, D.C., 20250-0030.

Or e-mail srs_land_sales@fs.fed.us.

The land sale is theoretically going to help rural schools -- except that it won't. Schools, like most other agencies, need reliable steady funding, not onetime gluts that vanish the following year. The people who really would benefit from this would be the folks who have enough money to buy up the land and they won't be sharing it once they have it. My sister lives in Colorado and she points out that many of these parcels are not the "crown jewels" of the forestlands -- but they're critical links in the way that we get to those crown jewels.

This is a stupid idea, thrown together without any real consideration of each individual parcel. It needs to be stopped.

Those of you on my flist who are in Europe may want to check out this:

http://www.boingboing.net/2006/03/17/europe_seeking_to_ma.html

If it's accurate (and no, I haven't done more than read this link) it's in your bailiwick, and there's a chance you can let your ideas be heard in time.

Five hours after the hurricane makes landfall, Brown finally got around to realizing he was going to need some more help... but not very urgently. Check out the pdf of the memo.
