Simple Folk

Just look at them, sitting here, bold as brass, like they never run off and made folks wonder.

Just look at them, sitting there, laughing and joking, like they never felt the touch of shadow.

Not a word of explanation, not to anyone. It’s a blessing Will Whitfoot kept Lobelia out of that hole after all.

We couldn’t explain, not that anyone’s asked. At least they didn’t try to auction off Bag End.

Perhaps when they’ve had a pint or two, they’ll find their tongues again.

Perhaps when we’ve had a pint or two, this will feel like home again.

[livejournal.com profile] shirebound posted a plotbunny based on the screencaps from [livejournal.com profile] shadowfax8 in the Green Dragon, and since I had a few minutes with nothing to do at work I wrote this. And then [livejournal.com profile] belegcuthalion cross posted her fibble at her journal and it occured to me that I should probably do the same with my drabble so I don't lose track of it. Apologies to those who had to read it twice!

Wow. It's so beautiful, the way you use it from two different perspectives.

The credit goes to [livejournal.com profile] shirebound because the way she framed the plot-bunny suggested the drabble to me.

And the different speech mode is fascinating. Experience vs. provinciality. Terrific work!

Oh! I love this. It's absolute poetry--I particularly love the last two lines. It's so sad but crucial the way that no one understands except one other.

Do you mind if I friend you? Wouldn't want to miss any more!

very nice job... i was confused when i first read it but realized it was in reply to Shirebound's plot bunny (which is the idea of my present ficlet ;)
.. very nice drabble, rabidsamfan..i especially like the last two lines:

Perhaps when they’ve had a pint or two, they’ll find their tongues again.
Perhaps when we’ve had a pint or two, this will feel like home again.

very perceptive =)

I had a lot of fun writing this fic -- especially when I realized how much the first rapid draft already had so many echoes that all I had to do was re-word a bit to make it come out right.

I'm glad you liked it!

Oh, but I love this, the two different point of views... yes, yes. Filled with some great imagery, this is.
