RSF's adventures in the kitchen
Mar. 17th, 2010 03:25 pmDried beans with recipe and crockpot = disaster.
Experimental French Onion Soup with experimental pear, a wild disregard for ingredients lists and general mucking about with recipes found on internet? = awesome.
And I'll never manage to make it again.

Date: 2010-03-17 08:09 pm (UTC)If you're curious, I started with one really big onion, one medium pear and a few cloves of garlic, sliced it all up and put it in the pot with salt, a bay leaf, and a pinch of sage to sweat down and caramelize (which takes forever -- or at least an hour!) added just enough white wine to cover, reduced that, then beef broth (well, sort of broth -- water from boiling up hamburger -- plus a bouillon cube) simmered for another fifteen minutes, ladled into crocks, added bread rounds and mozzarella, then broiled till the cheese was all melty and browning.
Measurements? HAH! I laugh at measurements! I eyeballed the entire process!
(This is why most of my experiments end up with me going, "hmmmmm... well, it's edible I suppose...")

Date: 2010-03-18 12:06 am (UTC)(dang, now you've got my mouth set...)
Glad you're feeling a little better. Avoid the green beer and the faux Irish, and let us know how you survive work tomorrow.

Date: 2010-03-17 09:28 pm (UTC)Well, of course! Nothing's as funny and thrilling than stirring something new and unknown in the pot, something that develops during the process, so to speak. And even if you don't "get" exactly the same recipe or taste again, it will be great to try to find the way to something that comes close. *smiles*

Date: 2010-03-17 10:31 pm (UTC)Experiments in the kitchen are always interesting. The soup sounds fun!
BTW, in what way were your beans a disaster? I've usually had luck with them in the crockpot.
