Dried beans with recipe and crockpot = disaster.

Experimental French Onion Soup with experimental pear, a wild disregard for ingredients lists and general mucking about with recipes found on internet? = awesome.

And I'll never manage to make it again.

LOL :) You must be feeling better ;)

And you never know, perhaps your next experiment will yield equally good results? :)

I am. Also bored out of my mind by staring at the walls of my apartment for days on end.

But the sun is shining today. Makes a big difference.

That's how it is with great coooking. You never manage to repeat it exactly how it was done. Pear in onion soup? That sounds very good.

It was, actually. Sweetish, of course, but it tasted good.

If you're curious, I started with one really big onion, one medium pear and a few cloves of garlic, sliced it all up and put it in the pot with salt, a bay leaf, and a pinch of sage to sweat down and caramelize (which takes forever -- or at least an hour!) added just enough white wine to cover, reduced that, then beef broth (well, sort of broth -- water from boiling up hamburger -- plus a bouillon cube) simmered for another fifteen minutes, ladled into crocks, added bread rounds and mozzarella, then broiled till the cheese was all melty and browning.

Measurements? HAH! I laugh at measurements! I eyeballed the entire process!

(This is why most of my experiments end up with me going, "hmmmmm... well, it's edible I suppose...")

http://www.foodnetwork.com/recipes/alton-brown/french-onion-soup-recipe/index.html is the recipe I was mostly using to predict the behavior of the onions...

Well, of course! Nothing's as funny and thrilling than stirring something new and unknown in the pot, something that develops during the process, so to speak. And even if you don't "get" exactly the same recipe or taste again, it will be great to try to find the way to something that comes close. *smiles*

Oh, I'm so glad you're feeling better!

Experiments in the kitchen are always interesting. The soup sounds fun!

BTW, in what way were your beans a disaster? I've usually had luck with them in the crockpot.

I was about to ask the same question with the same corollary.

oh my heavens, that is Too Much Work. Much as I love onion soup, I shall wait till the next time you're out here to supervise before I attempt that.
(dang, now you've got my mouth set...)

Glad you're feeling a little better. Avoid the green beer and the faux Irish, and let us know how you survive work tomorrow.

Actually, the hardest part of it is NOT stirring the onions while they're busily caramelizing.

But it was tasty.

Well, when I wrote that they were still little bean shaped rocks, but they are softer now.

They're better, after having been in the pot all day. Not as good as I hoped, but edible now.
