Wilbraham Estate Disposals Committee

By the time my twenty-first birthday rolled around he was married, to Harriet Vane of all people, and I didn't know whether to be jealous or awed when he asked if he might bring her along too. I laughed at myself for wanting to say no, and said yes, and I'm glad. He's as nice as ever he was, but with her he's something more, the way Dad was when Mum was in the room. A wealthy spinsterhood is fine and well, but someday I'd like to find someone whose hand fits into mine the way his fits into hers.

Ah, lovely! Time to read these books again, I fancy.

*does the happy dance and some absolutely incoherent babbling of glee*

Beautiful. Clever. Brilliant. And the right style, and the last sentence! Ah, the last sentence!

*dances some more*

By the light of day (and a few more braincells coming online) I think the last line owes a definite debt to Ellis Peters book "The Grass Widow's Tale"...

But thank you anyway!

Nothing to add... oh, and two years ago I forgot to mention that this is also absolutely awesome.

Hilary! The intervening 6 yrs or so of disposals (ha! reminds me of removals from The Leopard Lady!) must have been quite a lot of fun for her and Peter.

They're both writers, so she and Harriet could have had interesting talks, despite some jealousy?

The Nine Tailors is my favorite, best murderers ever, perfect atmosphere, and fascinating characters all. (Although Gaudy Night does have Oxford! And Reggie Pomfret!)

*happy sigh*

I have most of Dorothy Sayers's Lord Peter Wimsey books on tapes and never tire of listening to them. I adored the Edward Petherbridge (TV and audio) versions and had a crush on Charles Parker in the earlier Ian Carmichael TV versions.

Oh, excuse me, do I hear a message on my answering machine about a nude gentleman with pince-nez in a meek architect's bathroom? Must dash!

My... I haven't reread "Whose Body" in far too long.

*reaches for shelf*

I liked Edward Petherbridge, but absolutely hated the adaptation of Gaudy Night, purely because the script left out too many of the things which I loved the book for. It felt wrong, if that make sense. But they did a nice job with Strong Poison and Have His Carcase.

Oh, brilliant yet again! I've recently re-read The Nine Tailors, and Hilary is one of the best bit-part characters ever: nice to see how she grows up - lovely!

I like Hilary too. She's drawn well enough to see.

Thanks!
