Home again home again jiggity jig
Feb. 22nd, 2005 03:29 pmWell, that was a long strange weekend.
I flew out to LA for a Doctor Who convention, because my sister wanted me to come, and I hadn't really done anything with DW for nearly twenty years, so it was a bit of time-travel trip. It didn't help that I got sick on the plane -- and I mean toss my crackers sick, twice -- and arrived in Long Beach feeling faintly feverish and generally awful.
I had planned to use public transportation to get to LAX and then a regular cheapie shuttle to Van Nuys -- didn't happen. Took one of the door to door shuttles instead and forked out bigtime. But it was an interesting ride, and the driver was nice. We had to drop another fare in West Hollywood, so I had a chance to see Laurel Canyon and a few other places I only know from watching old TV shows.
Got to the hotel, checked in. My sister and her husband weren't due till evening, so I tried the spa while there was still a little sun, and then took a nap. Woke up feeling worse. Asked around and found out there was a 7-11 up the street, so I walked there, and bought some mashed potatoes and gravy from a little driveup restaurant called Beeps near it. (Good food, btw.) Gingerale and crackers and pepto bismol I got at the 7-11.
And the rain came down. and down. and down... Sunny California my hind foot!
Eventually sister and husband showed up, and I admitted to feeling awful. Joined the con the next day and spent my time either napping or in the video room -- which by a lucky coincidence was just up the hall from our room. They were showing a bunch of the Jon Pertwee's era shows, because they had a bunch of the actors from UNIT, and I could remember some of them. Also knitted my mom's second sock. (Which I finished so my sister could take it home with her.) And took naps. Lots of naps. Pretty much lived on mashed potatoes and gravy and ginger ale. Felt some better by Sunday, as long as I didn't eat and went to last panel of con and asked a question which got a fun answer from Terrence Dicks and Barry Letts.
Monday rented a car to take sis and husband to LAX, because my flight out of Long beach wasn't until 9:15 p.m. and I figured I'd find something to do to kill time.
Went to Disneyland. Rode all kinds of rides without feeling too bad as long as I didn't eat.
Flew back -- tummy was funny entire plane flight. And now that I've had something to eat it's funny again.
I'm getting very tired of this.

I don't have enough brain cells to catch up on my flist. If I've missed anything important, let me know!

So sorry to hear that you had a bad time. Try some chamomile tea (... and read chapter 7 of BIGS, if you like; it has been posted today - and it might cheer you up *grins* ) and lots of sleep.
Take care!

Date: 2005-02-23 04:52 pm (UTC)I remember when our landlady was driving from the Northwest across the country to the East Coast and pondered whether she should pack her coffee grinder, coffee maker and a supply of coffee. I looked at her in astonishment and asked if people didn't drink coffee in other parts of the country?
When she got back from her trip she blessed me with faint damns. Evidently they didn't, at the time. At least not what we'd call "coffee" in these parts.
But that was several years ago, and now I hear that Starbuck's and Seattle's Best and Coffee People are springing up even in the Heartland.

Ah, Doctor Who. That brings back fond memories. (Hearing an odd whistle in the back of my so-called mind)
Sorry you were poorly, but glad it wasn't a wasted weekend.

Date: 2005-02-24 05:41 am (UTC)On Saturday night, when I was too hungry to resist temptation and it was pouring too much to go to the cheap restaurant a block away, I went to the hotel restaurant and tried to get down some sauteed mushrooms (mistake) plain rice (not as much of a mistake) and sherbet (almost a good idea.) Opposite me, at the next table, they sat Nicholas Courtney, all on his own, who had forgotten his glasses and didn't have a menu. I gave him mine, and offered to read it if he'd like (which he declined, preferring to grill the waitress) and then spent most of my "dinner" trying not to either stare or comment. The funny thing of course being that if I hadn't known who he was I almost certainly would have struck up a conversation -- which I do with total strangers on a regular basis!
Very strange...
