Spent the weekend gallivanting, and when I got home tonight there was a package. My very own DVD of Sherlock Holmes.

No, no, not that Sherlock Holmes. This Sherlock Holmes. The one with dinosaurs.

It was... interesting. A couple of nice bits in the script, but they either left out a huge chunk near the beginning or forgot what they meant to do with it. I liked Watson. He had a heroic streak and just enough of a temper to not be a complete doormat. I want to kick the costume designer, though. If you're going to pull waistcoats off the rack, at least pull some that are long enough to do the actor credit. They did imply that he was a very competent doctor, however, which always warms the cockles of my heart.

Holmes was too short, and didn't know how to pack a pipe, much less smoke one convincingly. He did try very hard, though, and there were a few glimpses of possibilities unexplored when they were filming the scenes set at Baker Street.

The special effects were expensive enough that several times they were just being implied to save money. The plot was silly, involving a Holmes brother we've never heard of and an absolutely unrecognizable Lestrade. Then again, clockwork seamonsters with the capability to pull down ships do not portend a particularly well-constructed locked room puzzle, so I don't know why I'm complaining.

The frame story is Watson (sans mustache!) telling a pretty nurse the story during the Blitz, and of all the incongruities in the film, I think the one that made my nose itch was the streetlamps being on and no blackout curtains during the bombing raid...

It would be fun to watch with friends. Possibly. By three a.m. it might be absolutely brilliant!
