Hardbottle

I've done things that I never believed I'd do, not even while I was doing them. And it ain't done yet, for now I'm out visiting places in the Shire I used to think were stranger than news from Bree, and tucking a bit of Elven magic under each sapling like I thought I had the right.

But today beats all; for here I am, with a teacup on one knee and a plate of sandwiches on the other telling all the Hobbiton gossip to Lobelia Sackville-Baggins and her Bracegirdle relations, and I'm blessed if the old lady ain't smiling.

You express Sam's thoughts and wonder so well :).

Just love the idea that Sam thought everything would become normal and familiar when he returned to the Shire, but he finds more magic and strangeness at home than he found in the outside world!

Strange, yes, but more because of how he's changed. I think he's surprised at how much all the parts of the Shire seem alike to him, after growing up being suspicious of "Bucklanders" or other hobbits outside of his home area as different.

Thanks!

Samfan, you warm my heart. (Sorry, I didn't have a smiling icon.) :)

I don't think Lobelia smiled much (and not at all in the film.) Have I ever mentioned how amazing I find your icons? It's like having the stories illustrated...

Thanks!

Thank you! That is in fact what I try to do. Once a story finds its set, though, I tend to use the same ones. The fact is, I need more than 50 icons. Humor and angst tend to require different approaches...

Oh, thanks. I had the image for the last line to start with, but this one took a little whacking on to get into shape.

Oooh, "tucking a bit of Elven magic under each sapling" ... that's terrific. I love how 'your' Sam sees is as much amazed by the life he's returned to as the life he's been leading for a year!

Thank you! It's got to have felt strange, hasn't it? And odder, because some things look so familiar, but act so differently!

Can't you see him putting on his best manners? Although gentlehobbits can't be nearly as frightening as all those courtiers in Minas Tirith!

Thanks!

I want tea with Sam as well : - D

A lovely image : - D, and especially the first paragraph managing to convey so much about Sam and his ways in such a small number of words, brilliant.

The original draft was about thirty five words over, so I had to really go in with a chainsaw. Thanks!
