Smeagol

I never liked him much, the treacherous wretch. He’d had too much time to talk to his precious self, and got an earful of lies as thanks, if you ask me. And I don’t know as how we’d have got far if he’d ‘a been eating the lembas bread too, for there wasn’t barely enough as it was. Heaven only knows what he did eat, most times, and so cold and raw it would have choked me.

But still, I can’t make up a mess of fish and chips no more without thinking of him and his poor hungry eyes.

Oh! Wonderful! ::applauds:: Those exact things about Smeagol are always what hit me the hardest when I watch the movies. About how they were all so hungry, but Sam didn't want they only thing they had and Smeagol couldn't eat it. And their disagreement with what was 'good food'. Hahahaha...I *love* the fish and chips scene...and 'Tators? What's tators, precious??'

Thank you for this...very sad, yet very true. :)

Yes, I loved that scene in the book too. It's the closest Sam and Gollum actually get to a truce.

Thanks!

Love this! Even in the midst of his disgust at Gollum, Sam finds pity for him. His big pitiful eyes did look hungry, and no mistake. I find that I am also torn between disgust/despising and pity for him. In my very, very, very humble opinion, he was somewhat of a retched, yet dispicable creature from the beginning...even before the ring really took hold - after all, he did kill his cousin after only casual and very brief contact with the ring (so, from that, I conclude that he must have had a greater than normal propencity (spelling BAD!!) for evil). He was just down hill from there. Disgusting, yes...but also to be pitied.

Sorry for rambling...don't know what comes over me!

Gollum/Smeagol is fascinating in a lot of ways. You get the feeling that the Ring was more "aware" at the time when Deagol found it, but it still doesn't excuse his behavior. And yet at the same time he does keep his word for a while to Frodo, in however twisty a way.

And Sam did pity him, particularly at the end.

(we all ramble on our favorite topics, don't we?)

Ack! Go ahead and hit me upside the head -- Sam being all tough, and then knocking me for a loop with his compassion. Well done. You really have a gift for these punchy short pieces.

It helps to write them at five minutes before bedtime because you're disgusted that nothing else you've tried for the past two hours has worked...

ooh *sniffles* poor Gollum! I feel so bad for him. He breaks my heart. I have tears in my eyes now.

You write the best Sam-talk in the biz. I wonder if you will ever write a long fic with him as narrator.

Perhaps. But I'd have to sit down and really work out when Tolkien has him use "were" and "was"...

ut still, I can’t make up a mess of fish and chips no more without thinking of him and his poor hungry eyes.

He is wonderful, isn't he? And this drabble is, too.

The bad thing is we tend to remember bad things such as bad songs than good songs. At least that happens to me. So, I can't agree more with ... err, Sam, isn't it?

Safe in the Shire, I think Sam could be more objective about Gollum than he dared to be on the Quest.

Thanks!

Oh, Sam the softie... A very well-written window to Sam's mind, this. You know, for some reasons, I keep fearing that Sam will compare Smeagol to Frodo in the end, and I know I'll just hate that.

But I should've known better than to take a guess at the workings of your drabble-muse *thinks of the Erestor drabble and laughs out loud*

Thanks for this.

Drabble-muses are very short you know. And they keep getting their toga-thingies caught in the chair rungs when they're climbing up to perch on my shoulder and whisper rude thoughts into my ear...

You're welcome!

I doubt it. Sam is a hobbit after all.

I often wonder what Sam would have done if they had run out of lembas. Learn to hunt grubs and worms with Gollum perhaps? I mean, it's disgusting, but the creature obviously manages to get by, and maybe if you fried them up with a few wild onions and a bit o' salt...

Lol. I would love to see those two go hunting together. I think you're right - it's probably the wriggling that's the worst bit but once you chop 'em all up and stick 'em in a stew, Frodo would never know the difference!

Particularly with grubs, which are little more than wads of fat anyway.

But stew without potatoes? Poor Sam!

I love Sam's later thoughts of Smeagol in your drabbles...he still detests him, but there is regret and pity too that I know was there all along.
I know, that's not a terribly pithy observation, but it's how I feel. :-)

It's fascinating re-reading Tolkien and looking for Sam's interactions and relationship with Gollum. It's one of the things I think the movie got waaaay wrong...

Oh Sam, practical to the end and yet with a heart as big as all Middle-earth.

He’d had too much time to talk to his precious self, and got an earful of lies as thanks
That's a really good, telling line. Wow, there are so many good interpretations one can come to, both about the Ring's power to corrupt weakness and foible and strength and a person's own ability to deceive oneself. Very interesting.

Wonderful drabble, as always!

Heheh. I always think of when Frodo knelt to check the knot on Gollum's leg to see if it was too tight and discovered it was barely tight enough. There's layers to Sam, even if he seems simple.

Thanks!

the last line is, as always, a very nice "punchline" to the drabble =) brilliant~ =)

It's not a recycled idea, you know, it's a "recurring thematic element"...

*grin*

Sam always seems to tolerate Gollum better in abstract than in his actual presence -- at least up until Shelob's cave!

thanks!
