rabidsamfan: samwise gamgee, I must see it through (Default)

He’ll take it on in the end. It’s not just Mr. Frodo’s telling him so, but that he knows it’s a job that needs doing. Not that half the village hasn’t been bringing their troubles up the Hill already. Old Will was never much of a Mayor for anything but the banquets, nor ever needed to be, but times have changed, and my Sam changed with them. He’s got the heart to care about what folks need, and the hobbitsense to tell when what they want isn’t what’s best for them. He doesn’t see it, not yet, but he will.

Thank you. This was the bunny most susceptible to being a drabble I think, but I'm still toying with the others.

That's our Sam, alright. Without knowing the bunny, I can imagine the speaker as either the Gaffer or Rosie.

Ah - from Rosie's POV! And you made her intelligent and clever... thank you for that! Often Rosie is portrayed as kind of a very simple lass (well, Tolkien gave her that staggering welcome-sentence for Sam about the "wasted year", therefore it's easy to underestimate her...). But I love to see her through your eyes, really. Thank you!

The Rosie who knew Sam was coming back -- and from HoME, we know that she knew from the day the Ring was destroyed -- has never struck me as simple. And I continue to think that the "wasted" year for her is really just the wintertospring after Sam gets home and is busy taking with rebuilding the Shire. She doesn't say that both years he was gone were wasted, after all.

Yes, that is the Rosie I want to believe in!
The language in deceptively simple, straightforward yet evocative. Beautiful.

Thank you. We've got a lot of flexibility with Rosie. We should use it to her benefit!

He doesn’t see it, not yet, but he will.

He's proved it...

Yes, Sam has more to him than he's used to thinking that he has. Thank you.
