Éomer sat up abruptly. Beside him Éowyn stirred, but didn’t waken. Everyone else in the long hall was sleeping too. The only movement was the slow pacing of the king’s guard. He lay down again and tucked the blanket higher over himself and his little sister, trying not to think about the smell of the loft where they’d slept until now. He was surprised that Éowyn could sleep so easily here. Except that it had been a long ride, and she was only seven. He tucked her hair back. “It’s all right, sister,” he promised. “I’ll take care of you.”

This drabble owes thanks to [livejournal.com profile] periantari for nudging me to write it with her own drabbles and Marigold for handing me a challenge starter that I had more than one idea for.

Interesting! I remember now how Eowyn looked lovingly at her brother. How old is Eomer if she is seven? I love the siblings!

He's eleven. (I'm pretty sure. I didn't check my math last night and went by memory.)

Yup. The idea's been bubbling though. (And I'd been in bed before 10.) After I posted it I went back to sleep.

That's the first thing I've ever read about Eowyn/Eomer as children. What a fierce protectiveness! Excellent.

And the plotbunny who wants a longer story for them is going to have to be satisfied with this until I get finished with one or two of my other stories, thank you. Unless you'd like to write it?
Thanks!

You can't fool me. I've been reading "Mind to Mind" and I know perfectly well you can write about other people besides hobbits!

Oh, well. Another one for the back burner. (Which is getting crowded!)

very nice-but I expect no less from you. Glad you could take time from back breaking slave labor moving to drabble for us.

Thanks. The breaks from the slave labor... er, unpacking... are part of what makes the whole thing bearable. It's going to be very strange going back to work next week!

Welcome in your new home... I hope your water bed is filled now. And thanks for this drabble! Short and poignant, as always; I love the stubborn care of an older brother for his little sister. And there will be a longer version?

Interesting...

The water bed is filled. And warm. And lying there like a temptation to keep me from working on the kitchen...

Yes, perhaps, someday a longer version. But I don't mind if someone besides me writes it! (I mean, hey, the bunny is out there, chomping merrily...)

Absolutely gorgeous. *sighs*

Er, you wouldn't be writing about Eomer and Eowyn going nighty-night because you happen to be, say, EXHAUSTED, would you? (I didn't think so.) Have a lovely weekend!
