New Avengers Snippets!

Disclaimer: The New Avengers are copyrighted, but not by me. I think Canal+ or Mark One Productions owns the rights at the moment. Which means, of course, that this is fanfic – me playing in someone else's sandbox. Even moreso, anything in dark blue is a scene taken straight from the screen, dialogue and all, that either didn't hit the novelizations, or that didn't hit them in a way that satisfied my sense of the character arcs that I'm exploring.
As a rule *** means I'm still adding onto a piece or scene and ### means I'm satisfied with that bit for now.

Summary: For them as hasn't seen it lately: There's something rotten in Lake Ontario. A Soviet submarine!

It was probably the most chaste stolen kiss in the history of stolen kisses. Just a brush of his lips against hers, really, that didn't last long enough for her to be able to decide whether to encourage him or step on his foot. In fact, by the time she realized that he actually had kissed her he'd already gone back to watching the Russian agent in the swan boat.
Purdey turned her face away, just to prove she hadn't been affected, but she let her head rest against his shoulder. They did have to "make it look good" after all, and with Gambit's arm holding her so close there weren't that many options.
</>
Besides, it was a warm shoulder, a broad, well-muscled shoulder, a comfortable shoulder – and it was her own fault she'd encouraged Gambit by using it as a shield in the first place. There were more options than the "distracted lovers" cover – especially when you were standing on a bridge over open water – but it had seemed so natural to step towards him and to wrap her arms around him that she had just done it, and now, somehow, she was going to have to live with the consequences.

Epilogue
Don't you think we'd be a terrible match?" Purdey asked. "We'd bicker all the time."
"When you weren't finishing each others' sentences," Steed agreed calmly.
Purdey gave him a sour glance.
"You're asking advice of a confirmed bachelor," he pointed out. "It's not an experiment I've ever undertaken."
She snorted. "You weren't made for monogamy – except perhaps to the job – and Mike's the same way."
"It's an important job," Steed said ruefully. "And it does get in the way of things at times. But I think you're underestimating Gambit."
Purdey tugged at the branch that was impeding her view, and peered out at the quiet park. Still no sign of Koravich. "It doesn't matter anyway," she sighed. "It's not like he's going to ask me, is it? He hasn't even made a proper pass at me in weeks."
"Perhaps not." Steed said, resting a warm hand on her shoulder and waiting until she'd turned her eyes to meet his. "But I doubt it's because he's lost interest. I think he just doesn't want to be told 'no'."
That was something she hadn't considered. "He's never let it stop him before," she said, almost angry for a reason she couldn't understand.
Steed cocked his head. "Hasn't he?" His hand moved up to her chin and he brushed a thumb over her cheek in a gesture he hadn't used since the brief time that they were lovers. "If he'd run roughshod over you, I'd have known. But Gambit has always let you call the tune."
Purdey blushed and dropped her eyes. It was true. Gambit had half a head of height on her and several stones of weight. Not to mention three times as much dedication to the martial arts. The closest he'd ever come to forcing her against her will was that kiss on the bridge, and even then he'd not pushed as hard as he could. But that didn't mean that he didn't care, did it?
"You're a man," she said, and pulled a face when Steed grinned and doffed his bowler in acknowledgement. "And a gentleman. Don't you ever run roughshod over women?"
"I have done," Steed said. "When it was vitally important to the job at hand -- but I soon learned better than to try it when the lady mattered to me." His face grew serious. "A game of being rough – one that either person can stop with a word – is something else entirely. I think you know that. But I've never seen any attraction in true domination. Partnership is much more fun."
