Disclaimer: The New Avengers are copyrighted, but not by me. I think Canal+ or Mark One Productions owns the rights at the moment. Which means, of course, that this is fanfic – me playing in someone else's sandbox. Even moreso, anything in dark blue is a scene taken straight from the screen, dialogue and all, that either didn't hit the novelizations, or that didn't hit them in a way that satisfied my sense of the character arcs that I'm exploring. Links to quotes and screencaps (where they appear) are courtesy of bromfield hall.

As a rule
*** means I'm still adding onto a piece or scene and
### means I'm satisfied with that bit for now.

Summary: For them as hasn't seen it lately: Burt Brandon has a secret, and Steed, Purdey and Gambit aren't the only ones after it.

Scenes

"I'm a great believer in fine detail," Steed said, co-opting Harmer's heavy glasses to use as a magnifier on one of the photographs. "Ah! there's a great deal of fine detail in the background of this photograph." Purdey leaned over to look, having to angle her head to focus through the small reading-glasses portion of the bifocular lenses. Gambit came over to look too, curiosity overriding his reluctance to inflict the fading aroma of manure onto the others. "Now it's a pleasant café scene," Steed went on. "But in the background. Is that Commisar Visllovsky, paymaster general, and he is handing over money. And To whom? To our old friend Harmer." He looked over that the Undersecretary with a pleasant expression. "The ministry are going to be very disappointed in this Harmer."

Harmer pulled a gun out of his jacket pocket, cocked it and leveled it with chilling competence. "Only you three know," he said, moving to block the passage to the door. "And you three are now dead."

"Gambit, you're the nearest. Disarm him will you." Steed sounded remarkably calm, considering.

Gambit looked Harmer in the eyes, glanced once down at the gun, and met the man's eyes again. Harmer stood unflinching. There was no question that he would shoot.

But when Gambit moved the hammer fell with a dull click, instead of the explosion of a bullet. Gambit caught the man's gun hand and twisted it on around behind his back, delivering a karate chop to Harmer's neck as he pried the gun free from the suddenly limp fingers. Harmer fell to the floor, unconscious. Gambit leaned against the newel post, spinning the gun around his finger like a gunslinger before he looked up to meet Purdey's eyes.

Purdey was still trying to remember to breathe. There hadn't been time to look away this time, and if she'd thought that jumping onto the wing of a plane was as stupid a stunt as Gambit could pull he'd been quick to prove her wrong.

Steed padded over to Gambit, tossing the clip from a revolver in one hand. "What, I asked myself, is a Ministry UnderSecretary doing with a loaded gun?" he asked rhetorically. "He might hurt himself, I thought. So, for his own safety…" He put the clip into Gambit's hand, and Gambit took it with a grin.

Purdey crossed her arms. "I wish you two would tell me when you're going to practice this telepathy."

"Telepathy?" They both gave her innocent looks, although it was Gambit who asked.

She shook her head at him. "When you went in, you knew the gun wasn't loaded," she accused.

"No," Gambit said simply. "I trust Steed."

Steed beamed, "In that case, how about a hand of poker?" He shuffled the deck in his hand elaborately.

"In everything but cards," Gambit added a grin flickering behind his eyes.

Steed gave her a wounded look,
and Purdey began to laugh. She couldn't help it. The pair of them! "I hope you've saved some champagne," she told Steed. "I think we're going to need it."

Ficbits and Dialogue notes

Gambit, you're not going to do that corny old one of putting the car in it's path. P

No. Not that corny old one. This corny old one. G

That's not corny, that's downright dangerous. P

**
You really should relax, Harmer, relax. Sit down, take your coat off. Enjoy a nice cooling glass of wine. I can assure you, the fact that you've taken your jacket off shall remain on the Secrets List.

They're taking their time.

Some things take time. Come along now, park your official posterior and stop wearing a hole in the carpet. How about a hand of Solo? Solo three pounds, Misère ouverte, five pounds, Royal abundance seven pounds.

You need four for Solo

I know, I'm more or less a novice myself. Cut for deal.

You're not going to like this.

You've got it. You found it?

We have, but to quote my friend. You're not going to like this.

You found it?

Yes. And this is what all the fuss was about. Eight rather pedestrian views of Vienna.

Vienna? H

Vienna? S

Yes. They were taken about oh, 200th of a second and F8, I should say. And they're not even in color.

It just doesn't make sense. A man dead, total chaos, for these. It just doesn't add up.

You're quite right. They are just views of Vienna. Steed, Brandon was bluffing. He was always bluffing. Ah, there was never any need to worry. I can tell the minister there was nothing to it. He can close the file.

Scenes worth scribbling at… "Could be a blocked carburetor," Have you seen my overdraft. The whole "I need food" sequence. Investigate why Steed has changed, although Purdey and Gambit haven't had a chance to do the same when they come in and find Harmon. That's not corny, that's downright dangerous. Purdey's p.o.v. of the ending, when Gambit goes directly into the gun… She's got to have heard the hammer fall!

Thinking Out Loud

Have you seen my overdraft? Terry couldn't work out as much as Gambit would normally have done… he may be feeling out of shape as a consequence.

It's worth noting that Gambit appears to be a lot more sensitive to his less-than-pleasant condition than Steed. He keeps finding reasons to stand halfway across the room from people after all.

It's interesting watching where people's eyes go in this one. Particularly Purdey and Gambit at the end!

And I may make a catalogue of Purdey's reactions to the various occasions when Gambit pulls off some damn fool stunt that should have got him killed…

I like this episode more every time I watch it. Which is a bonus!

In My Not So Humble Opinion

Right in the top tier. The interplay between the three of them is marvelous, Purdey gets to be competent and wear practical clothing… okay, she crashes into a tree, but before that she gets to be competent and practical. Gambit gets to go undercover, and work off his frustrations by pulling darnfool stunts. And Steed… oh, Steed gets to be Steed. I love his interactions with Harmer and the Minister, but the real delight is his instantaneous ability to come up with a plan to rescue Purdey. He must have a closet stocked with all sorts of odd bits and pieces, hey?

Favorite scene… Hard to pick. Rescuing Purdey, perhaps? There's something scrumptious about Steed saying "Now we're three," when her feet get untied.
