Merry, on Caradhras

Cold be hand and heart and bone… and other parts of me too, that would be much happier warm. It seems like every other time we’ve been in trouble something’s tried to chill us to the core. The wight in the barrow, and the Riders and now the mountain – or whatever is hiding here.

I’m glad that Gandalf has made a fire, but standing here in the cold and dark reminds me of Weathertop and how nightblind we were when we turned away from the flames to try to see what was attacking us. My teeth were chattering then too.

You're welcome. I wanted to write the Nine Walkers to complement the series I wrote about the Nazgul, and this was the best "time" in the story to think about them.

I'm loving the Caradhras series. I especially liked Boromir and this one. (Why yes, I am a bit Merry-obsessed, why do you ask?) With Boromir I liked the fact that you revealed his motivation for speaking so well; this one I like because it links events so well, in such a hobbity way. :-)

I think you write Merry well. And I agree, having Sean Bean's face to put onto Boromir makes it easier to, well... relate to him. Sean put so much into the character--conflict, and interest, and menace, and charm... Certainly made it fascinating.

It's the way you introduce everyday things into your drabbles that make them especially touching- who but Merry would wonder about night blindness from the fire and not being able to see who was coming-again?

In some ways Merry had a really hard Quest. I mean, Old Man Willow, the Barrow Wights, the Riders in Bree, and on Weathertop, Uruk-hai and orcs, AND the Witch King! Yikes! I'd be worried too!
