Disclaimer: The New Avengers are copyrighted, but not by me. I think Canal+ or Mark One Productions owns the rights at the moment. Which means, of course, that this is fanfic – me playing in someone else's sandbox. Even moreso, anything in dark blue is a scene taken straight from the screen, dialogue and all, that either didn't hit the novelizations, or that didn't hit them in a way that satisfied my sense of the character arcs that I'm exploring. Links to quotes and screencaps (where they appear) are courtesy of bromfield hall.

Summary: For them as hasn't seen it lately: When one of his agents goes missing, Steed calls in Gambit and Purdey for help and the three of them uncover a nest of Nazis on a remote island.

Scenes
[1. George Stannard (victim!) is running across barren land toward the sea, pursued by two men in fishing gear who are using their fishing rods and hooks to do antisocial things like rip his clothes. He takes refuge in a monastery, wanting sanctuary, but it turns out the monks are not very monklike. He manages to escape in a small boat, but as he passes a promontory one of the fishermen with the casting rod takes another swing at him, leaving a scratch on his face. Stannard collapses, and the boat goes on.]

[2. Steed pulls up to an apartment house and heads upstairs. He encounters a little old lady who is trying to find her Poofypoof, but goes on to Stannard's apartment. When he enters he gets jumped by a fellow we recognize from the earlier scene. He tries to catch his assailant, but is entangled in the leash of a small yappy dog, which he, in most gentlemanly fashion, returns to its grateful owner.]

[3. Steed calls Gambit and asks him to fetch Purdey, as she is not answering her phone…. See below…]

It had been a very late night, and Purdey intended it to be a very late morning as well, so when the first glimmers of daylight filtered through her curtains she burrowed under her pillows and went back to dreaming. She'd just got to a really good dream when suddenly it changed to a nightmare about an earthquake and she opened her eyes to find herself sliding off of a mattress which was no longer horizontal. Fortunately, the rug was thick enough that only her pride was bruised. She fought back the covers to find Mike Gambit standing on the far side of the bed and scowled.

He didn't look intimidated. In fact, he looked disgustingly smug. "Good morning, Purdey," he announced with officious alacrity. "I'm sorry, did I wake you up? Duty calls, and you have not been answering." He put the phone back on the hook to illustrate his point.

"You were weaned from prep school too early," Purdey informed him bitterly. When Gambit put his mind to it he could be the worst nuisance in the department, and he'd obviously decided to set a new standard.

He walked his fingers along the bedstead as he came closer, still pleased with himself. "Don't look at me like that. I tipped you out of bed, not into it."

"Good night, Gambit." She turned over to go back to sleep. He couldn't tip her out of the floor.

"Purdey…" She felt him come over and crouch between her and the bed. "I never went to prep school," he confided cheerfully.

"I need my beauty sleep," Purdey insisted, hoping he'd go find someone else to annoy for an hour or two.

"No." She could almost see the smirk on his face. "There's a lot of things you do need. But that is not one of them. Definitely not."

Somehow she managed not to smile, but it was too late to pretend that she wasn't waking up. "Mike Gambit, one of these days…" she warned.

"I know," he answered. "I'm looking forward to it."

Purdey gave up. Threats simply bounced off that ego. "What's it about?" she sighed.

"Stannard." Gambit wasn't teasing now. Purdey propped herself up on one elbow and shot him a look, but he only shrugged.
"Steed's at his apartment now, and he wants you there ten minutes ago."

"Steed!" Purdey exclaimed. "You should have said!"

"I just did." Gambit grinned and popped upright like an athletic jack-in-the-box. "I'll wait for you outside, shall I?"

[4. Purdey and Gambit go to Stannard's apartment, where Steed asks Purdey about her "special knowledge" of George. Gambit gets dispatched to take on Stannard's assignment (guarding Von Klaus, a visiting lecturer who is working with suspended animation) and Purdey and Steed go to find George, who appears to be off fishing.]

Thinking Out Loud
In my not so humble opinion:

This isn't a bad introduction to the series – it's got some nice interaction between the three regulars, and each of them also gets a chance to play alone as well, so we can observe their very different styles.

Favorite scene: Gambit tipping Purdey out of bed.

Biggest gripe: What, Nazis again? I spotted the plot "twist" about the time that Von Klaus got kidnapped, and when they started yammering about "Germany's greatest treasure…" Of course, Steed didn't actually hear Von Klaus' lecture, so he probably did have to check and see who was in that casket…
