rabidsamfan: samwise gamgee, I must see it through (Default)

Sam, Hollin

That’s another fire we can’t have, Strider says, and Pippin’s not the only one was hoping for another hot meal before we went on. The cold’s got into my bones this past fortnight, what with all the walking we’ve done. Bless me if I haven’t started to creak when I move. I can feel the Gaffer’s aches in my fingers and knees, and I was hoping not to have that parcel in my pack for a good many years yet.

Still, the sun is out, and if it ain’t too warm, it’s bright enough. It’ll do. It will have to.

Thank you. He does have a practical downtoearthness about him sometimes, doesn't he?

He has a way of grumbling while he's doing what needs to be done that I admire. *grin*

*stares in awe*

You know what moves me most? There are many Sam-writers I know meanwhile, and some of them rather brilliant (like jodancingtree and Marnie) but you manage something that takes my breath away every time: You make him utterly believable and palpable. Alone this line:

I can feel the Gaffer’s aches in my fingers and knees, and I was hoping not to have that parcel in my pack for a good many years yet.

Who else would even think about Sam's fear of enduring the same malady like his father? That's marvelous.

*bows deeply*

Anyone who had a grandparent with arthritis, and has watched the next generations begin to have the same trouble would probably pick up on Sam's reasonable expectation of following the Gaffer's lead. But I got the idea for this one straight out of Tolkien...

"Then the silence grew until even Sam felt it. The breathing of the sleepers could be plainly heard. The swish of the pony's tail and the occasional movements of his feet became loud noises. Sam could hear his own joints creaking, if he stirred." -- The Ring Goes South

I love Sam's practicality. It'll do, it has to.

Love him.

He may not be a solver of World-size problems, but little ones he understands...
