Eighth

A hundred years to find a mare too stupid to dash herself to death in my presence, and ten foals from her belly. Centuries to breed the herd, mares put to stallions chosen for increasing strength and intelligence. I stood at every birth and coaxed each trembling newborn with soft hushings, filling their noses with a charnel breath before they’d known the living air. A thousand years to create nine companions for our road.

How many leagues did they carry us, only to die within sight of our task’s end? The River has taken what was left of my heart.

Timeline (fiction only, most recent version, includes AU) first previous next last

"Why do these black horses endure such riders?" Frodo asked Gandalf in Rivendell, and Gandalf said that the horses were born and bred to the service of the Dark Lord. And so I wondered...

Wildly underslept at the moment, which is why I'm behind on my flist and writing Nazgul drabbles. Anyone have any ideas I can use for 2 through 7? The Witch King has all kinds of handles, but the rest...

I'm afraid that with my perverse sense of humor, the only thing I can think of is the unnamed Nazgul in The Very Secret Diaries lamenting (in what I always imagined as a Hindu accent, for some inexplicable reason), "Oh, how I detest this life of vile servitude!"

Not quite what you were looking for, I imagine. But hey, I'm underslept, too.

Great drabble, by the way. Wonderful idea for a series!

*snorts*

But really, that is marvelous and surprising. If I wouldn't know better, he could even be one of the ancient Rohirrim. So far I have no idea for 2 - 7, but I'm overslept, too, and as soon as I'm more coherent, I'll try to figure out something (though I doubt I have your imagination, honestly).

Another good one, I like this series. :-) Ummm, ideas for the other seven Nazgul... Gah. It is early here. Okay, thinking, thinking... Oh, you could assign each of them one of the seven deadly sins...? Best I can do at the moment. :-)

The trouble with this is that I find myself feeling sorry for Eighth instead of just for the horses . . . I look forward to more Nazgul drabbles from you :)

Hmmm... I know that #2 Nazgúl was supposed to be WitchieKing's lieutenant, ruling in Dul Guldor (sp?), so I imagine he is an ambitious, nasty fellow, even in comparison to the others. I will consider your challenge and send you any suggestions. I like very much what you have done so far!

Wow - you always get me with the ideas I hadn't thought about. Very insightful.
