Muster of Rohan: Merry

I suppose I should be grateful for the darkness; without it I should have been sent back by now, to sit in Edoras and wait for news that couldn't come when not a man can be spared as messenger. But I have fought Orcs before, which is more than some of the Riders can say. Children they are, who speak in gruff whispers lest their voices betray them and make a show of scraping their chins in what passes for morning.

I cannot help but wonder. Would Theoden King have bid me ride beside him if I had a beard?

Fantastic! I was just thinking of this part of Merry's adventure. You pick such wonderful details, to bring an image to life.

This is the mature proud hobbit I would like to see more of in fanfic.

Marvelous! Book!Merry is probably my favorite character as far as the way he is written (especially in dialogue). I think you've captured him beautifully.

I love your Merry. I love Éomer, Théoden and Dernhelm, too, but this Merry makes my heart easier, after you pierced it with the first three "Rohan"-drabbles.

They all are awesome, brilliantly written and unbelievable good. Unbelievably. They will be in the update on my site on September the 3rd, all of them translated. That is the highest praise I can give you, and still it's not enough.

*bows deeply*

A very mature, thoughtful Merry. He certainly had a lot of time to think and reflect on that long trip where he had to stay quiet and couldn't even talk with most of the people surrounding him. I was especially taken with this:

to sit in Edoras and wait for news that couldn't come when not a man can be spared as messenger

(((brave, loyal Merry)))) My heart ached for him, both here and in the book. He needs to feel needed, and to be regarded as a child is a sore spot for a hobbit.
what passes for morning. (stubble?)

Lol! Only a hobbit would wonder if he would be allowed to go to battle if he had a beard. This is wonderful!

That's a wonderful image. I love the idea of him being glad of the darkness because it conceals him, yet lightness reveals that by rights he should not be the first to be sent back. Thank you for sharing all these wonderful drabbles! :)

I'm feeding back on all of them at once--hope that's OK.

The different POVs read one after the other is great--lovely, contemplative stuff: so very well done.

Thank you for writing these little bits of goodness :)

Oh, Merry. My heart hurts. *sigh* I think this is my favorite of the set, but I can't say much more than that.

Of course, it seems such a hobbity thing, for him to wonder if Theoden would have let him ride if only he'd had a beard.
