“I’m fine,” he said, and stubbornly kept on putting one foot in front of the other.

“I’m fine,” he protested, when they wanted to stop and let him rest.

“I’m fine,” he growled, when someone asked again, and turning to answer made his head ache all the harder.

“I’m fine,” he grumbled, sitting idle while the others put together the meal.

“I’m fine,” he whined, trying to convince himself to swallow the spoonful of medicine.

“I’m fine,” he mumbled, as they wrapped extra cloaks around him and settled him near the fire.

“I’m fine,” he sighed, and settled into sleep.

Could be, except for that "the others put together the meal" line--I mean, if it were Pippin, that'd hardly be worth mentioning, first off, and secondly, it wouldn't be 'the others', it'd be Sam.

Or maybe she wrote it so we could interpret it as whichever hobbit we wanted...? :D

You are assuming that this story takes place during the quest. I'm not so sure. None of the pronouns are defined and neither is the context.

Those details would fit any number of tramps around the Shire with Frodo, who picked up Bilbo's habits as a youth and passed them on to all his cousins. Say they started out from Tookland (Frodo, Pippin, Merry, Fatty, Folco and a couple of others,) meaning to get to Brandy Hall for Pervinca's birthday, and were delayed by rain, which gave Pippin a cold. It's not nearly as dramatic as the quest, but it fits this ficlet.
