Crossing Celebrant

When Sam looked down into the tumult of water it seemed as if the river was standing still and he was flying back upstream towards the Dimrill Dale. His toes curled around the taut rope beneath his feet, desperate for purchase. How had Pippin managed to step across so lightly? Had he closed his eyes the whole way, or had he been so glad not to have to make another leap in the dark that even a strand of thread would do?

“You wanted a rope,” he reminded himself, tried not to think too much of bridges, and went on.

Having crossed rope bridges (three strand) I know just how unsteady they feel, so I have nothing but sympathy for Sam at that juncture of the narrative...

That's great. Such a small part of the larger journey, but to Sam, it was very traumatic!

Yes. Although he was forgiveably cock-a-whoop over having managed it afterwards. *grin*

That's an excellent description of how it feels to look down at rushing water. I could practically feel the spray on my face. ((brave Sam)) ((you))

I actually love standing on bridges and looking down myself, just for the lovely sense of vertigo, but I generally pick very solid bridges to try it!

Thank you!

Memo to the rest of the Fellowship:

OK, yes, Gandalf just left you all for a Balrog with a whip, and Haldir has been being haughty, but would one of you get back there and hold poor Sam's hand, please?? Sheesh.

*pokes Merry*

Oh, my, now I can just see the look on Sam's face as someone else shakes the rope!

LoL!

Thanks!

"You wanted a rope" - LOL! (I'm finding a lot of things funny today, but I think this line really is, and at a very unexpected point in the story.)

Pippin's scare was jumping over the holes in Moria and Sam's is walking over a rope bridge over a rushing river, both things I wouldn't particularly like to do.

I love Sam steeling himself to do it. "You wanted a rope,"

Let's see -- Orcs on this side of the river, Food and beds on that side of the river, and all you've got to do is pull a fool stunt that your father would thrash you for even considering.

Although I do expect that Pippin is just grateful that he doesn't have to jump.

Thanks!
