Gardener

There are times when Sam wonders who the Sackville-Bagginses have hired in his place. Have the flowerbeds been properly mulched, and are the coldframes ready for the coming spring? Has anyone thought to turn the muckpile? Will they know how to coax the blossoms from the rarer plants, the bush that was carried in a bundle all the way from Laketown, or the shy blue flowers that he has only ever seen at Bag End and Rivendell? It’s none of his responsibility no more, he scolds himself, and tries to plan for Crickhollow instead.

But he dreams of Bag End.

aww, you're pulling my heartstrings ! I'm a passionate gardener myself and I can feel Sam's concern like it was my own. To leave my garden ? - unthinkable ! Thank you for that lovely piece.

Thank you. It's hard to leave anything that you've invested years of work into, and I'd expect Sam knows some of those plants like they were his children.

But he dreams of Bag End.

Of course he does. This is beautiful, tender and delicate. Thank you so much!

As they get farther south and see signs of spring it must get all the worse, I'd think. Thank you!

Poor dear Sam. Little does he know both garden and smial will be his one day. :-) Thank you for sharing, as always!

You're welcome. I've never been sure that he's entirely happy with that legacy -- at least not at first.

*sighs*

Just the way Frodo made sure all his books were assigned (which I am putting into a story I'm working on, incidentally.)

I love your drabbles. I know you know that, but it bore repeating.

Oh, goody! I love it when the bunnies go on and find new homes.

Thank you!

Ouch! Poor Sam gave up a lot when he went with Frodo. I've never thought of that particular aspect of his sacrifice, but it must have been every bit as hard for him to give up the gardens as it was for Frodo to give up the smial.

I doubt Sam realized how much it would cost him to go off until after he'd been gone a while. But the habit of looking at the weather and thinking, "time to prune" or similar must have caught up with him sometime!

Thank you.

Oh Sam. Of course he worries about Bag End. After all, in some ways it was as much his as it was Frodo's. There's a reason why Galadriel's Mirror showed Sam the things it did, and why they affected him so strongly.

Lovely, just lovely.

Thank you. It's true, Galadriel's Mirror does sort of cut to the heart of what's fretting Sam and Frodo the most, doesn't it? *bunny noses are wiggling now*

Wonderful. I love, absolutely love, your Sam; it is so right for him to be worried on the Quest about the garden at BE. For me the nicest touch though is the way he tries to discipline himself: he doesn't tell himself to think about the journey, but to plan for Crickhollow. Oh, what glorious, perfect, Sam-like optimism. I love it. Thank you so much!

*laughs* I didn't even think about it being optimistic on Sam's part to plan for Crickhollow -- it just seemed like Sam somehow. And like a gardener, come to think of it, since there's such a long time between planting and reaping for most things. It's nice to know that it rings true.

You're welcome.
