Along the Morgai

Frodo wondered, as Sam slept the sleep of the exhausted, whether anyone would ever tell the Gaffer what had happened to his son. Faramir, perhaps, or Aragorn, or a messenger riding up to the row of smials below Bag End with a letter that would take the old hobbit an hour to puzzle his way through. But none of them would know of Shelob, nor Cirith Ungol, so the tale would be forever incomplete. “Samwise the Stouthearted,” he whispered, “Hero of the Age,” and smiled at the memory of a hobbit-lad battling dragons in the garden with a muddy trowel.

This one is marvelous. I love, I love the picture of the Gaffer puzzling out the letter, and last line is an absolute killer. You've hit a home run.

Thank you. It's funny, but I find myself wondering whether or not Lobelia would want to know Frodo's fate as well.

We know so little of what's on his mind once they reach Mordor that it's fun to speculate.

Thanks!

it's nice to see that in your drabble Frodo actually cares about Sam's fate. But then, if anything had happened to Sam ( and consequentially to Frodo ) Evil would have spread and all messages for Bagshot Row would have been meaningless. Seems as if Frodo had a spark of hope left in him...

I think Frodo expected to die at Mt. Doom, whether or not the Ring was destroyed. And by the Morgai he knew that there was no chance at all that Sam wouldn't follow him whereever he might go.

Thanks.

Oh, my. This is so very beautiful, and so sad. You have a remarkable talent for economy of words, saying not one syllable more than needed, yet packaging an essay's worth of feeling... Lovely. Thank you!

How especially poignant that this should be from Frodo's POV. He (and Sam) certainly had a lot of time to think and ponder during this arduous journey, and a lot of that thought must have been about each other.

*hugs them*

Rereading you really notice how much attention pays to what Sam needs in and just after Cirith Ungol. Maybe being parted from the Ring temporarily gave him a breathing space? It's fun to think about.

Thanks!

In just a few words you made me feel grief over what Frodo and Sam go through, pride in Sam's deeds, tenderness for the gaffer, love for Frodo's love for Sam, and then I top it all off with a wistful smile for the lad Sam used to be. Too perfect! :-)

Oh, my! You have done it again! It's so nice to see a moment where Frodo is thinking of Sam tenderly. It's usually the other way around (at least that's how it's usually shown). As much as Sam loved his Mr. Frodo, his Mr. Frodo surely loved him as well.

Great job!

Frodo's affection for Sam shows up most clearly in Ithilien and just after Cirith Ungol, I think. It's amazing going through and reading those parts again.

The resigned finality in Frodo's thought, how he seemed to be quite certain that he would never return, and how even at that moment he thought of Sam and the Gaffer, is poignant and sad. And that memory, that smile in the last sentence, how touching.

I think Frodo must have been clinging to his memories, as the Ring tried to obliterate them, because they were his strength and reason for continuing. At least he had Sam there as a reminder.

Thanks!

Yes, and when they were in Mordor, poor Frodo had no expectation of ever being able to tell anyone what had happened either. I'm glad you liked this one!
