Caradhras

Never had he thought that snow could come down sideways, though down it must have come to grow so deep so quickly. And never had he felt such bitter cold. His teeth were chattering hard enough to crack, and it wasn't until Boromir stopped to kneel before him and snug the hood of his cloak tighter against his ears that the spasms eased. He watched the Man through snow-laden lashes, too cold to protest having his mittens adjusted like a child gone numb-fingered from a snowball fight, and too breathless from the mountain and the wind for words of gratitude.

Wonderful. And I especially love the fact that the reader can imagine whichever hobbit we choose. (This gem could definitely be the heart of a longer tale. There just aren't enough "Caradhras" fics!)

Interesting you should say it could be any of the hobbits because it wasn't until then that I realized that rapidsamfan didn't mention Sam by name, I just -assumed- it was Sam :). I'd be curious which hobbit other people pictured as they read the scene.

Um, yeah, that would be -rabid-samfan :). Ah, for the ability to edit comments...

LOL! Most of the time I just delete them and try again. But it is frustrating, isn't it!

Well, I started with Sam, but as I wrote it I realized it could be applied to any of them and I decided to leave it that way.

Yeah, I like Fellowship fics too, and Caradhras sort of begs to be expanded upon, doesn't it?

Oh, this is nice: a mix of dismay caused by being treated like a child, and the adult gratitude for a friend's help.

Thank you. At a certain point of being cold and miserable it all gets jumbled, I think.

I do so love these fragments, like bite-sized adventures, or a memory stirred by a scent or strain of music...

This tale does leave one with goose-bumps, as if July in Kansas were as cold as the Red Horn Pass in January!

Oooh, I like this review... scents I think of often as memory inciting (thank you Rudyard Kipling!) but you're right, music has that quality too...

This is lovely! Such a simple act of thoughtfulness from Boromir, and I love the mixed feelings that provokes. So beautifully written, it's like a picture.

I think that Boromir was better prepared for those conditions (at least in his head) than any of them but Gandalf. (Legolas doesn't count, as he wasn't that affected.) I can see him looking after the others automatically.

Thank you!

Ah, I enjoyed this very much. Not many Caradhras fics out there to read, and Caradhras drabbles...well, it's the first Caradhras drabble I've read. :D

And I, too, love that I can imagine whichever hobbit I choose (though my first thought wasof Sam).

Oh, surely someone else has written a drabble or two about Caradhras?

It's kind of fun imagining it as Sam because he's not entirely sure how to take being taken care of instead of the other way round...

Coldness, the chattering of the teeth and the numbness of the fingers and icicles on the eyelashes, is drawn so vividly here that I can actually imagine how stiff and aching my jaw would be if my teeth were to chatter so.

And Boromir, the silent gentle Man who watched over the hobbit and helped them without saying anything; and the hobbit's wordless gratitude... well-done.

This is marvel No. 4. And now I would even more like to write a fine Boromir-fic. *sigh*
