Moria

It wasn’t as if he’d never slept in the dark.

When the summer days grew hottest he’d go to the darkest cellar in Bag End to wait for evening, and stretch out on the cool stone floor with his head pillowed on his arms, breathing the good green scent of dirt caught in his sleeves and the heady bread-smell of the ale barrel. He’d fallen asleep that way more than once when he was a littling, waking with Mr. Bilbo’s oldest blanket tucked over him and the master telling his Gaffer not to shout.

He wished he could sleep now.

Oooh! I love this! That sounds delicious...sleeping where it's really cool...but with a warm blankie over you. Poor Sam did have lots of trouble sleeping on his journey, didn't he? It seemed he suffered from insomnia much more often than Frodo...who was likely just too exhausted from carrying the ring to sit up worrying as Sam did. Poor Sam. Insomnia stinks!

Thanks for this!

When Sam was sure he could sleep safely, he slept like a log, but you're right, he stayed awake worrying a lot. I can see him catching naps in Minas Tirith, catching up.

Moria and the tunnel at the top of the Stairs always seem the scariest places in the book to me. I don't know if I could have slept in either place!

Oooh, very nice. Such a wonderful contrast between carefree past and dire present.

I was going to add something about how Moria smelled too, but that'll have to wait for another drabble.

Yes. I've done that myself on truly hot days when the basement was the best place to be. Haven't you?

Thanks!

Wow, I've never had a basement, really, except back when I was really little. But it sounds like a wonderfully cool place. I actually fell asleep on a cold tile floor once though, when I was about six!

Fine! I can smell the ale and the dirt, and I can see the blanket - what a warm, gentle imagination of Bilbo and his quiet friendliness!

Thank you!

I am halfway through The Ringbearer and the Rose. I wasn't fast enough for this week's update, but now the translation will be online on July the 9th.

I have a mental image of Bilbo discovering the sleeping Sam and creeping hobbit quiet over with a light blanket to tuck over him, just in case the floor gets a little too chilly!

And I'm looking forward to seeing the translation. But please don't worry about how fast you're going. I can wait!

That's a lovely image of young Sam, I love the little signs of Bilbo's kindness and the contrast with where he is now. I've often wondered whether or not sweet memories like that were a comfort for the hobbits while they were on the Quest - sometimes it must have been hard to think about such innocent times, but I guess thats also why they kept going... hmm, I'll stop rambling now...

I think that the memories of what was best and good about the Shire were what kept them going -- knowing that if they failed, all those things would fail as well.

But there would be times when it would make them homesick, don't you think?

Definitely. I've been working on a 'homesick Merry' fic for absolutely ages. I think they must sometimes have felt like it was all too much and want nothing more than to be at home again, even though they knew that that was precisely why they had to keep going.

Oh...the images in this are so well done. Wow. And I've got goosebumps, just thinking about the young Sam and then the too-old-before-his-time Sam of the Journey. Poor Hobbit...so much worrying for him to do on the trip.

I love the bit about how Bilbo would tell Sam's dad not to shout at him for falling asleep. :) Awwwww. Very nice. ::hugs::

I always imagine Bilbo and Sam as amazingly good friends, despite the age difference. Kind of like my mom and my five year old nephew, who seem to have found a private language that those of between them have no real access to. The love of Elves and stories seems to transcend their age and class differences quite neatly. Between them they must have baffled the Gaffer, whose very name means "stay at home".

But Sam has a lot of the Gaffer in him too. It really shows on the quest, when he tries to think of all the ways to stay practical and still protect Frodo.

Of course,I never really get tired of thinking about Sam...

preciousss drabble... Sam's recollection of times past sounds so real... and your last line just makes it a good ending...
really like the mention of Sam "falling asleep but not wanting "his master telling his Gaffer not to shout."
awww~!
very nice =)
