Changing of the Guard

Mithrandir said to watch for two, but here there were four, and under Tom Bombadil’s wing. Not coming by the Road, either but riding to meet it from the south, as if no dangers lurked beyond Deadman’s Dike. Three of them wore heavy woolens despite the lingering heat of the day, and he might have thought them borderers, for they all wore swords, had it not been for the fourth, with his scholar’s softness and the oddly familiar set to his chin.

Tom’s eyes twinkled as he spotted the watcher, “No ordinary travelers,” they said.

And Aragorn nodded. “I know.”

Thank you! This is beautiful and interesting, and from a surprising POV. Very well done! And of course Tom saw Aragorn...

Of course he did. I suspect very little gets past Tom Bombadil without him seeing it.

Glad you enjoyed!

Thank you. It turned out well, I think. (And the idea I started with might still get used someday...)

Wow, that's a stunning POV. And brilliantly written, as always. :)

I'm beginning to giggle every time someone comments on the POV here -- I'm not sure why. To me it's an "of course" that Aragorn saw them reach the Road. Now if I'd written from the point of view of one of the local rabbits... *grin*

Thank you!

I just love that "oddly familiar set to his chin". How do you say so much in such a teensy amount of words? What a drabble-master/mistress you are.

This is wonderful -- you always approach things from such a new and creative direction.

It's much easier to leave out a lot of details when you're writing for an audience that already knows so much about the topic. I'm not sure how many of my drabbles would work on the uninitiated.

One of these days I'm going to find a random number generator, set it to picking pages out of my omnibus edition, and see if I can't find a way to drabble an insight for a third of the pages it picks. It's a heady exercise in writing flipping open the book and skimming until the bunny bites!

Thanks!

Ha! It's so easy to forget how terribly observant Tom Bombadil really was. Then again, it's just as easy to forget how perceptive Aragorn the Ranger could be. Great look at a pivotal, quiet moment;-).

Yup. The bunny started out by wondering if those two were acquainted, and then it got fuzzy...

Thanks!

Oooh! I love this! I am continually amazed at how much you can say in only 100 words!

Thank you so much for your drabbles!

You're welcome! As I said to Shirebound, having an audience that knows the material helps.

Oh, dear. I am so stuck on this chapter. I don't think it's very exciting. I know that Frodo is on the brink of undeath and Sam is a gibbering wreck and Aragorn and Merry and Pippin are agonized, and it still seems boring to me. So I'm rereading again from the beginning and revising, to make sure I understand the flow. If you had any comments for me, I'd love to see them. But no worries either way. I think I need to get the whole thing _out_ -- but I'd rather let it unfold than try to force it. Ah, well. The new work is holding off, so I can devote time to this. Hooray!

Isn't it odd? I don't see Sam falling apart at all -- asking hard questions of Aragorn and Glorfindel certainly, to get all the opinions and secrets into the open, but not gibbering. He doesn't gibber, for all that his tears flow easily.

You see, ever since they met Gildor Sam's been sure that he has a task to do, and the task is bigger than wanting to see the world, or even wanting to follow Frodo. He's met Ringwraiths now, he knows how horrible that evil is, and he won't leave Frodo to it. If it turns out that the task to do is to keep Frodo from Sauron's grasp, then so be it -- but not until they've done everything in their power short of the knife first. And, begging Strider's pardon, but Frodo's more likely to listen to those he knows best, since the Ranger can be downright scary at times -- but if Strider can somehow carry Merry and Pippin and Sam's voices along to wherever it is Frodo's hiding that would be helpful...

(I hate it when people read my notes.)

Well, okay, that's a possible scenario. I'm still trying to work in Sam doing some kind of interpretive dance, preferably with veils. They're going to adapt Asfaloth's headstall to make a jingly belt for him, and he will dance upon the grass, twirling, to beckon Frodo back. I'm working the Lúthien connection. What do you think, plausible?

(I think I still have Fennelseed's latest on my mind...)

er...uhm...me? read notes?...*hides sheaf of papers behind her back*

Interpretive dance hey? And veils, too! I shall have to make sure that the cold water is running in the shower before I read the next chapter then.

And you would remind me of Fennelseed's latest when I am at work and don't dare explain why I am blushing to my colleagues.

Oh, I'm so sorry you're at work. You won't be able to read this then:

He felt a touch on one of his tied arms, and heard a breath of chuckling. "Sam?" Frodo ventured.

*sneaks off feeling very wicked and pleased with herself*
