Bottom of the Bin

“Dear Marigold,” it said, in her brother’s careful hand,

“I haven’t leave to tell you why, and I won’t, in case you find this before the flour’s gone, but like as not you already know I’ve gone a mite farther than Crickhollow. Mr. Frodo’s got to go, you see, and I’m to go with him and how far and how long is more than I know. But I’m like to see Elves, if Gandalf don’t turn me into a toad for writing you. Tell them that might miss me that I’m sorry I didn’t say more. Especially Dad.”

“Love, Samwise.”

Now that is as perfect a 'Sam voice' as I have ever read written! Most folks write him like some Appalachian hillbilly and though I can't call myself innocent of all such errors in early fics, I've become more and more attuned to them. Thank you for this little gem.

Oh, I know what you mean! And I'm guilty of it too sometimes, especially if I've been listening to the movie accents instead of reading the book. (And even with this, I find myself wondering about a couple of word choices in the gray light of morning. Hmm... "Them that might" or "them as might"...?)

thanks!

Thank you. I should think he writes the way he speaks -- as long as it isn't poetry!

I like drabbles where the hobbits leave clues to their whereabouts. It always bothered me to think that they just up and left their families with no word. Clever of Sam to put his note in the flour bin. :)

I like stories like that too, but they would have had to be terribly careful. I tried to think of a place Sam could hide his note that would keep it hidden for at least half a month. Thanks!

Very sweet. You can imagine Marigold treasuring and reading this letter every day that her brother was away, once she found it.

very nice insight to how a letter by Sam would sound like... great possible gap-filler as well...

love it. =)

Oh bother. You've reminded me of another story someone did -- absolutely dropdead marvelous -- where Sam writes a letter to the Gaffer and leaves it with Barliman and now I can't think who wrote it! I'll spend the whole day trying to find it now...

thanks!

It never sat right with me that Sam had to leave his family without saying so much as goodbye, so this little note is right on. He would think of some way to let his family know that he would be gone for a while. Lovely drabble :)

He certainly didn't tell the Gaffer he was going farther than Crickhollow -- that or the old boy is a much better liar in the face of a Black Rider than I could ever be...

But Sam must have spent that summer saying goodbyes and wondering if he'd ever see places again too. He'd have to try to say something somehow.

Thanks

frowns and thinks about how Sam put the letter at the bottom of the flour bin then decides that Sam must have put the letter at the bottom and poured the flour on top of it

The letter sounds so Sam. Excellent!

Lol! You know, I never even considered how he'd get the letter into the flour! But you're right, that would be the neatest way to do it.

Thanks!

I meant to feedback this last night. I was sure that I had. Seems that I hadn't!

... so, I know that it's been said, but I just love the Sam-like feel of this drabble. It is so him. And he's such a dear older brother, he is.

*wants one* *is distracted* Oh Sammm. *sigh*

This was perfect! It sounded just like Sam.

I always wondered about how, or rather if they told their families that they would go. This seems to be the perfect solution.

Yes, there was such a need to keep the secret, you wonder if one day the message just came that they were gone.

Or maybe the left the job of explaining to poor Fatty...

Thanks!
