Happy birthday, Sam. You owe me a mathom. To tell the truth all the present I want from you today is for your eyes to open. Not that I’m expecting it. Strider says you won’t wake up until you’ve started healing, and that cut on your head bleeds whenever they change the bandage. The orcs had some stuff that healed me up, even though it hurt a lot. Never thought I’d wish I had orcish medicine, but I do. I want to do more than just sit and talk at you and Pip and Frodo.

Come on, Sam.
Wake up!

Thank you. I think poor Merry must have the worst time of any of them those two weeks.

I found this moment moving, too. I had forgotten that the fourteen days after Mount Doom would have included Sam's birthday. Poor Merry, though it's touching that someone is there to remember Sam's birthday, even if he doesn't know it. Haunting, too, to think of the other friends, family and a sweetheart back in the Shire who must be remembering Sam on this day, as well.

Thank you. I've been thinking about this ever since I realized when Sam's birthday is.

aww... poor Sam... and I hope Merry doesn't do anything drastic to get Sam better...

Merry's got more sense than that. Which gets in his way sometimes!

I never thought of that Sam would sleep away his birthday. This was so great! Poor Sam... and poor Merry, so desperate for his friends and family to wake up.

Beautiful! I love Merry's practical approach to almost everything - even when he's got to be lonely beyond belief - being the only waking hobbit for miles and miles....

Thank you!

You're welcome! Pippin's probably awake part of the time -- he gets up the next day -- but the bulk of the worrying still falls on poor Merry.

Poor Merry. It must horrible for him to be all alone and wait for his friends to wake up. That's beautifully done.

BTW: How do you know when Sam has his birthday? I was looking for the birthday dates of the hobbits but couldn't find them.

Sam's birthday is mentioned at the tail end of one of the appendices -- the one about Calendars -- when Tolkien is discussing which days the hobbits celebrate and speculating on why.

Glad you liked the drabble!

Thank you, I found it. Anyway, I wonder why it is said that it was Sam Gardener's birthday and not Sam Gamgee's. I thought Gardner was only common among Sam's children, notably Frodo.

Family names in the Shire can change as a person gets known for something markedly different than his father was known for. Sam becomes "Sam Gardener" during the years he is mayor and has all those kids.

Again, yay! Sam! He so often gets overlooked or ignored in genfic--yes, the other three are cousins, but after all Sam has done, he deserves some attention and love and worry too! *hugs him*
