In Bree

Not one night has passed since I saw them lying in the barrow, their faces pale and still and the blade bright across their necks. They sleep better in this warm firelight. Sam snores, and Pippin winds the blanket round him as he turns. But Merry shivers -- even in sleep I see fear on his face. Does he dream of the wight, or of Black Riders? I rescue the blanket and cover him again. He tucks against me, the way he did when he was small. Heed no nightly noises, I whisper. The horns do not cry for you.

Thank you! It's from a plotbunny that's been sitting on my hard drive for weeks, so I'm glad it finally got loose.

Oooh, a wonderful look at such an overlooked experience. Merry did have such a strong reaction after waking up, and I'm not surprised it would follow him into his dreams. Very nice.

Curiously enough, Merry is the hobbit that I have the most trouble remembering to include -- I adore Sam, so I don't forget him, you can't write about Sam without noticing Frodo, and Pippin just shows up and leaves sticky fingerprints all over the keyboard, but Merry is quiet in my head most of the time -- so this was a good exercise for me. I'm glad you liked it.

I'm glad you liked it. Aren't drabbles fun?

Strangely, I've only ever written one real drabble. It started out as an image and when I finished with it it was almost a drabble so I edited it into one - but I like the original better. See what you think...

Autumn Sunlight

I saw autumn sunlight today; glinting sidelong across the mountains. Trees touched with gold and auburn, their wind tossed crowns whispering regrets to the sky. And then I saw you, your hair tossled as the treetops, a halo of umber flecked with that sorrowful light. But you were not sorrowful. You revel in this season and the light of new adventures was in your bright eyes.

So come. There will be no dangers on this road, for we dwell now in the Undying Lands and no evil may make its mark on these beloved shores. Take my hand and lead me through the hills and valleys of this Blessed Isle. Let us rejoice as the sunlight of autumn picks out the fruits of summer's bounty. We will taste of them while the warmth still lingers. Winter will come and with it the sleep of long forgetfulness. Let us celebrate the life and renewal we have been given and take our joy while we may.

Oooh! I like that! Especially the image of hair as tousled as the tops of trees in the wind! (I wish I'd thought of it!)

There are times when a restrictive form (drabble/sonnet) can make an image more powerful, because you have to hone the words -- but there is a place for free verse in the world, too. We just don't have word in our current slang for word pictures like this one.

Thank you. I think Frodo is very protective of his cousins, particularly in the early part of the quest.

Thank you! (and have I ever remembered to mention how extraordinarily hard your icon makes me laugh?)
