Is this what halflings are meant to look like, so rosy cheeked and bright eyed? Do they scamper soft-footed like him in their faraway land? The other two moved carefully, like old men after a cold night. It was only the wine that lent color to their faces.

He stands by Father’s chair and listens to my tale, tipping up on his toes to listen all the harder when I speak of his kinfolk. His curls tumble over his forehead, and I remember Sam’s lank hair, and Frodo’s brittle locks against his pillow.

I should have given them more food.

*shrieks in hysterics*

This has to be the most beautiful one of your drabbles, beating Bob and Bill by a thin measure. Faramir's observation and comparison and that last line, which clearly shows his generosity and compassion, they spoke so much in so few words. Oh... *sobs*

You're a genius.

*hugs you*

Well, thank you. And I'm fascinated by the fact that you mentioned Bill and Bob as second most beautiful. I never plan what to write until I flip through the book, so it kind of surprises me how strongly people react.

Oh, dear heaven. This:

The other two moved carefully, like old men after a cold night. It was only the wine that lent color to their faces.

And this:

I should have given them more food.

Again one of your peaces I wished I would have written it myself.

Thank you.

Well, you need to keep writing "Winter Fire" so I can find out what happens! Thank you. I'm glad you liked it.

Thank you. I sat for ten minutes trying to come up with it, and then the whole sentence appeared in its final form at once.

Oh...Wonderful! No wonder Pippin and Faramir are great friends with his pereptiveness of hobbits. Well done.

I'd have to doublecheck, but I think that Faramir is the only one of the Big People who extends Frodo the courtesy of sitting down so that they are looking at each other eye to eye.

If having a broken heart inspires you to write more stuff like the Grey Havens drabble you gave us this morning, then I'm going to persist...

His curls tumble over his forehead, and I remember Sam’s lank hair, and Frodo’s brittle locks against his pillow.

How lovely, how poignant... what a super way of illustrating the changes Frodo and Sam went through. I think my heart just broke (again). Thank you!

Well, Pippin had been drinking Ent drafts -- the change in his hair is actually one of the things that Tolkien mentions, so it seemed like a logical contrast.

The other two moved carefully, like old men after a cold night.

Like everyone else I love the last line, but what leads up to it is terrific too, and makes the contrast between the hobbits all the sadder. Wonderfully vivid details, including the above and Pippin tipping up his toes to listen. Great stuff!

You're too good at making me sad in just a few words (of course, anything about Sam makes me sad :) ). Faramir's emotions were very good and it was so descriptive....

Thank you.

I think I write sad drabbles because they're easier, actually. There are so many places in the books where someone witnesses the members of the Fellowship in action and we don't see how they feel.

Did you know that if you make exactly the same comment -- spaces and all -- in a discussion, the computer sends you back to the previous reply and doesn't insert it again?

I do.

I think it was [livejournal.com profile] pippinswolf who mentioned you, either in her own LJ or someone else's. Anyhow, I thought I'd check out your LJ and the first thing I read is this. That last line is Faramir in a nutshell. Again, tears in my eyes. First [livejournal.com profile] shirebound, now you :)

There are just... gah. There are no words for how perfect this is. From the start to the ending, it just has this flow that pulls you along, and not a word is wasted here (which is important, what with the drabble-craft).

Gah. I love this.

(That ending line makes me want to cry. *loves*)

*accepts tissue* Ah, thank you.

I love that you can do what you need to - I mean, a last line like a punch in the gut and gah - that thing where you didn't waste a single word. Drabbles and LotR fanfic go well together, yes.

This is the best of the lot

After about a week, this one keeps coming back to me, I think because the language so poetically and precisely captures Faramir's realization of what he is seeing and what he has seen. A second reason is the emotional logic and practical illogic of his conclusion, as if he hadn't given them all the food they could carry, as if anything he gave them could change what the quest must do to them.

Oh, thank you. It's a real compliment to have someone keep thinking about a piece I've written. And you have such great insights. I hadn't even noticed how impractical Faramir's response was, because I was thinking on an emotional level.

Welcome to livejournal!
