Drabble - Worse than Mordor

Remember that tree, Mr. Frodo? It had the sweetest apples in the Shire. And that shed there, it’s right in the place where the daffydowndillys always bloomed come spring. The well’s been fouled – something’s dead down there and please don’t let it be Lotho. Though probably ‘tis. Saruman had to know we were coming. He’s left his filth smeared on the kitchen floor, and there’s not a bite of food nor drop of drink in Bag End I’d trust not to be poisoned.

You go along back to Farmer Cotton’s, and let me get started. I’ll make it right.

Somehow.

Oh, Sam.... the essence of Sam, really. This is wonderful. (BTW, saw your drabble in Mary's challenge, and it is great!)

*hugs and hopes that you'll find a new place with a payable rent*

*cringes with image of Lotho in the well*

Lovely, this.

Can I ...

*looks sheepish*

...ask for something from Frodo's POV upon seeing Bag End?

Er... forget it! You're busy! Sorry...sorry...sorry...

*runs away feeling guilty*

Oh my Sam, my dear, dear Sam. Is it any wonder we all love you so much?

Wonderful drabble, I'm speechless.

I did one for red panda's challenge too.

(That's so I can find it later, you know.)

Some of those drabbles and ficlets are just shattering, aren't they?

I'm glad you liked this one!

Thank you. I'm really enjoying drabbling... That sounds rude, doesn't it? But I am!

I'm busy, but I like being distracted (and I'm still wondering about how well you took my rambling commentary on "decisions". I didn't scare you did I?)

I'll think on Frodo and Bag End. He's actually a hard character for me to write, believe it or not!

The essence of bravery is the going on...

Not my idea, and not my words -- I'm paraphrasing Elizabeth Moon in The Deed of Paksennarion. But it's why I love Sam.

thank you

As a matter of fact, yes, you scared me and more than a bit. But I love the challenge though I'm ashamed to say that I put off working on it until I can regain some measure of confidence to tackle it again. *blush*. Plus RL has been horrible lately and I can only write on weekend.

Anyway, for someone who thought that writing Frodo's character is hard...you did marvelously!

This is why I don't offer my services as a beta... I've got no tact. You did notice how much I shredded my previous version of The Ringbearer and the Rose when I went through it, yes? I promise you, the story is marvelous. I wouldn't have taken the time to be honest if I didn't think so. And I really want to read the rest of it, even if you never change a word!

My cardinal rule here is You're the author! If you think my suggestion is good and matches your intentions, then it's worth acting on. If I didn't "get it", or I "got it" just the way you wanted me to (whether I'm comfortable with the idea or not) then my suggestions are just dishwater. Just because I'm opinionated doesn't mean I'm always right! You're the published author here, darlin', and I'm the amateur.

Never hesitate to tell me (or any other critic, editor, or beta) to take a flying leap... At least not about fanfic. We don't have the power to hand you a paycheck!

*laughs*

Thanks for the reassurances. I tell myself that when it comes to fanfic, I write for my own pleasure, and no other's, but still I'm troubled when someone is not comfortable with the stories I write. Anyway, thank you. I'll get back to Decision as soon as possible. The three-day Easter holiday should be long enough for that.

I got there through your link and yes, they are shattering. I got goosebumps reading them. I'm trying to write one for Mary, but I keep getting distracted. :) I've read yours too, in redpanda and Mary's lj... Breathtaking, as always.

Even if you had left out Frodo's name or any reference to him it would have been obvious that this is Sam speaking. It's wonderful.

I'm actually quite tickled at suddenly getting a bunch of comments to older entries. (It's nice, really, to know that they're not just taking up space on the lj server and not being read.)

BTW, if you're looking for my fics, there are two on my ff.n page that haven't appeared here. "Fourteen Days" which is what got me started writing fanfic again, and "Unlucky" which I've yet to finish...
