Oct. 20th, 2004 07:02 pm I had a chance to go again and talk to some of the people who've been working the exhibit, and I found out a few things.
* The skeleton and things in alcohol in Saruman's display belong to the local museum, because you can't ship biologicals.
* It takes six people to lift Boromir and the boat.
* Some pieces were built just for the exhibit. Not just the Moria like entryway and the Argonath, and the troll in Moria diaorama, but also a half-size Treebeard (Yikes! That's HALF SIZE!) and Lurtz.
* The detail work on the Hobbiton Mill goes most of the way around the back as well as on the "front" side.
* The Museum of Science has more of the artwork on the wall than any of the previous displays.
* Most of the swords in the displays are the real thing. And the orc tools are heavy.
* Sauron's armor is so sharp that it can cut people. And has. (Which explains that tattered cloak!)
* People don't look up, so most of them miss Gilgalad's spear. And the banners from Edoras too.
* The sealing wax in the Rohan display is really wax. A lot of the bottles are empty, but some of them had stuff inside.
* Elrond's telescope, alas, does not work.
* Arwen's sword (Throng Cleaver) is the same sword that Elrond was carrying in the prologue.
* Galadriel's dress is made of handmade fabric. Only twenty yards were ever made.
* The pile of "library" papers by Gandalf includes production blueprints and invitations to Bilbo's party. And yes, that's Gandalf's handkerchief!
* It's hard to make the two Sam-pack's match because the masses of the things in them are so different.
www.mos.org, if you haven't gone and want to try to score a ticket. They release a few day of, but most of them go by internet.
Some genius of a high school teacher had brought his/her class to the exhibit (with question papers to find answers to.) That kind of homework I could have done!

Date: 2004-10-21 11:37 pm (UTC)That is *such* a kind generous offer. I wish I could take you up on it.
Alas, 'real' life interferes....

Date: 2004-10-21 03:20 am (UTC)If you paid the full price you also got exhibit hall passes, but I wonder how many people took advantage of them. It's well worth wandering around though. And the Lightning demonstration is seriously cool.
The docents get asked all the time whether or not the guy in the boat is "real". Depending on how mean they're feeling they'll send someone over to tell him he's got fifteen minutes until his next break while the high school students are still debating whether or not they've seen him breathe.

Date: 2004-10-21 05:15 am (UTC)I remember how I stood in front of that boat, completely in awe. I had visited Madame Tussaud's a day before, but this was far better than half of the prtrayed people in that famous exhibition.
And of course I saw Gil Galad's spear!

Date: 2004-10-21 03:22 pm (UTC)*drools* Oh, I LOVE relative size! I must see this!
Arwen's sword (Throng Cleaver)
I read this as, "Thong Cleaver." Gave me a whole other image, it did! @_@

Date: 2004-10-21 05:21 pm (UTC)BTW, thank you for your reaction to the latest "Devoted" part. I softened Merry's speech a little in response. Feedback is good. Thank you!

Date: 2004-10-22 12:41 am (UTC)I looked over the chapter again, but I'll admit I'm not sure what exactly you changed. Of course, that may be the cold meds. Why izzit that just before I've got a big storytelling date and a planned extravaganza of being with friends I start sniffling?

Date: 2004-10-22 01:38 am (UTC)I often get sick before events as well. I think it's the curse of a busy life. I really do like to lie around reading books, and don't have nearly enough opportunity to do it. Best wishes for feeling better!
