rabidsamfan: samwise gamgee, I must see it through (Default)

I had a chance to go again and talk to some of the people who've been working the exhibit, and I found out a few things.

* The skeleton and things in alcohol in Saruman's display belong to the local museum, because you can't ship biologicals.

* It takes six people to lift Boromir and the boat.

* Some pieces were built just for the exhibit. Not just the Moria like entryway and the Argonath, and the troll in Moria diaorama, but also a half-size Treebeard (Yikes! That's HALF SIZE!) and Lurtz.

* The detail work on the Hobbiton Mill goes most of the way around the back as well as on the "front" side.

* The Museum of Science has more of the artwork on the wall than any of the previous displays.

* Most of the swords in the displays are the real thing. And the orc tools are heavy.

* Sauron's armor is so sharp that it can cut people. And has. (Which explains that tattered cloak!)

* People don't look up, so most of them miss Gilgalad's spear. And the banners from Edoras too.

* The sealing wax in the Rohan display is really wax. A lot of the bottles are empty, but some of them had stuff inside.

* Elrond's telescope, alas, does not work.

* Arwen's sword (Throng Cleaver) is the same sword that Elrond was carrying in the prologue.

* Galadriel's dress is made of handmade fabric. Only twenty yards were ever made.

* The pile of "library" papers by Gandalf includes production blueprints and invitations to Bilbo's party. And yes, that's Gandalf's handkerchief!

* It's hard to make the two Sam-pack's match because the masses of the things in them are so different.

www.mos.org, if you haven't gone and want to try to score a ticket. They release a few day of, but most of them go by internet.

Some genius of a high school teacher had brought his/her class to the exhibit (with question papers to find answers to.) That kind of homework I could have done!

I take it you missed them, then? Or are you merely astonished at the silliness of people?

I missed them! Argh! Can't my boss understand that I *must* take the day off and see it again?!

Well according to the website they'll be open late on Friday night, and again Saturday and Sunday. The spear is on top of the case with the first Age Elven armor, near Elrond's telescope. The banners are overhead as you walk between the wall and the exhibit with Legolas and Gimli, going toward Treebeard.

If you decide to go later Friday night (like 8, my landlord's supposed to come and fix the toilet around 6) let me know and I'll see if I can get a ticket for the same time.

That is *such* a kind generous offer. I wish I could take you up on it.

Alas, 'real' life interferes....

It's going to another US museum, but I've forgotten which coast.

I saw the exhibit twice, and it makes me sad to know I won't get another chance. You're so right about people not looking up - I missed those things the first time around but I really lingered and tried to see everything the second time.

For some odd reason it's very comforting to think of Gandalf having a handkerchief.

I love it that he has a toffee bag. Even if it is pipeflints inside it instead of toffee LOL!

I saw this exhibit, it was absolutely amazing! So expensive, though. And am I the only one who did a double-take when they first saw Boromir in the boat? ;) Didn't realize you lived so close, nice to know someone else is from my area. :)

I got a membership for the museum, so the tickets are only 3 for the exhibit, and I'll get to mess around in the rest of the halls for the rest of the year. (They're redoing a whole lot of the exhibits, and it'll be way cool.)

If you paid the full price you also got exhibit hall passes, but I wonder how many people took advantage of them. It's well worth wandering around though. And the Lightning demonstration is seriously cool.

The docents get asked all the time whether or not the guy in the boat is "real". Depending on how mean they're feeling they'll send someone over to tell him he's got fifteen minutes until his next break while the high school students are still debating whether or not they've seen him breathe.

* It takes six people to lift Boromir and the boat.

I remember how I stood in front of that boat, completely in awe. I had visited Madame Tussaud's a day before, but this was far better than half of the prtrayed people in that famous exhibition.

And of course I saw Gil Galad's spear!

Oh wow... how interesting! The exhibit is supposed to be here in Summer 2005---I can't wait! And I'll regale others with my knowledge of it, now.

*drools* Oh, I LOVE relative size! I must see this!

Arwen's sword (Throng Cleaver)

I read this as, "Thong Cleaver." Gave me a whole other image, it did! @_@

Currently I'm thinking I'll see it in Houston next summer. Several folks have talked about going. That's an easy plane ride from Denver.

BTW, thank you for your reaction to the latest "Devoted" part. I softened Merry's speech a little in response. Feedback is good. Thank you!

You're welcome for the feedback. (And after Halloween madness and World Series madness gives me my braincells back again, I'll be able to organize my thoughts on By Life or Death, too.)

I looked over the chapter again, but I'll admit I'm not sure what exactly you changed. Of course, that may be the cold meds. Why izzit that just before I've got a big storytelling date and a planned extravaganza of being with friends I start sniffling?

I changed how cock-sure Merry sounds about Sam being in love with Frodo, as if he's known for years. It's more realistic with where the character is coming from and going to.

I often get sick before events as well. I think it's the curse of a busy life. I really do like to lie around reading books, and don't have nearly enough opportunity to do it. Best wishes for feeling better!
