Oh, western wind

The taint of chlorine gas from the east, the dull thump of gas-masks on each breath as the men look out across No Man's Land.

When wilt thou blow

The rumble of artillery fire approaching relentlessly; the thunder of heaven from blackened skies.

That the small rain down can rain.

Lightning flare, revealing the white armbands, the red crosses, the frightened eyes looking to him for reassurance, for orders. He smiles, grimly, and does not tell the ambulance crews what he is thinking.

Christ, that my love were in my arms,
And I in my bed again!

The prompt for the 27th was poetry, so I went for the oldest, shortest poem I knew. (Thanx, anonymous!) And then I did some internet research for the setting.

Ahhhh. Love and horror. Macabre and mundane. So visual. White bands and red crosses. This is some kind of fine.
