James McCarthy was acquitted at the Assizes on the strength of the evidence which Holmes explained to the defending counsel, but not, alas at the court of public opinion, and he found himself still unable to offer for Alice, although she loved him all the more. Old Turner, observing the misery which haunted his daughter due to this state of affairs, came reluctantly to the conclusion her happiness outweighed his reputation, and released Holmes and I from conditions. He is gone now, and it is to be hoped this account will free son and daughter to begin their lives anew.

I've always wanted to take a crack at the ending of this story and mend it! And today's wwoes prompt gave me the chance.

Yay! I love your solution to this. Old Turner's attitude really bothered me, too, but I couldn't work in a change of heart for him. Nice!
