It has taken me this long to realize that Sarah Sawyer, in "Sherlock" is named for the fictitious daughter of the "old woman" who came to collect the wedding ring which Holmes advertised as being lost in the Brixton Road in "Study in Scarlet"

I feel like such a bad Sherlockian.

If it's any consolation, I would *never* have made that connection. Even if I had known that Sarah's last name was Sawyer. I think you still get points for figuring it out now!

Well, it helps if you know someone who actually does use "Sally" as a nickname for "Sarah."

But *headdesk* it was there, right in front of me!

Actually, I was listening to VALL on tape [I've decided to Sherlock-ify it] and there were several things that I think Moffat and Gatiss got from there. They are true fanboys!

"Sally" can sometimes be used as a nickname for "Sarah". Although Sally Donovan may also owe her name to the same place.

(There aren't any Donovans in canon, according to moonfind.)

Yeah... I wasn't saying it wasn't... more that it COULD be the source for two names. :-)

I'm a bad Sherlockian too! Her name was familiar to me, but I kept wanting to attribute it to a different fandom. Silly me. ;-)

If it helps any, make room on that "Bad Sherlockian" bench for me. *sigh* I know there is a lot of fanservice in the series, but I missed that one, dammit!

Well, I'm a bad Sherlockian, too, 'cause it never even occurred to me. I just kept wondering why they didn't name her Mary....

Considering how very, very many Canon touches Moffett & Co. scattered throughout those 3 90-minute eps, don't feel bad. You'd have to be William Baring-Gould not to miss a few dozen on the first few viewings.

My personal favorite is the logo on John's takeaway coffee cup while talking to Stamford -- Criterion, the name of the bar where Watson runs into his old classmate in A Study in Scarlet.

Moffett's specialty - fanboy porn. Just watch the current Who and see how many tidbits and button lines he tosses in, in the certain knowledge that everyone is watching with their typers in hand.

Yup. That one passed me by too. Thanks for pointing it out!
(Searching for my fine-toothed-comb goggles for another viewing)
