All Is Revealed!
Jan. 1st, 2011 01:04 pmI actually wrote something lately! Then I went and submitted the things I wrote to and couldn't tell anybody about any of them except for my brilliant beta
janeturenne. Of course, the good thing about giving is that you receive too, so let's start with the prezzies I got:
For Holmestice I was given Most Peculiar which is a lovely character study of Watson by
lelek.
For Yuletide I was given In This House Everything Is Twice, by Jay Tryfanstone, which is based on the book The Children of Green Knowe by Lucy M. Boston.
And then there were the things I wrote for other people:
I'll probably get around to crossposting these here to my journal, eventually just for caution's sake, but if you want to see them in their natural habitats, here goes:
The Detective Who Cried Wolf I wrote for
mme_saberage who wanted a bit of holmesbashing for Holmestice. The story is set just before FIVE, and is about an occasion when Holmes really overstepped the boundaries with Watson. Holmes POV. I had a ton of fun writing it, and JaneTurenne really helped me get it right.
My main yuletide assignment had me writing Between Now and Forever for Kariszma83. She wanted Ralph Crewe, Sara, and Becky living happily ever after after the events of the movie version of A Little Princess (the 1995 version), and while I didn't quite manage that, I'm pretty happy with what I did write. It's definitely the most popular of my Yuletide stories.
At the other end of the popularity scale -- mostly because the fandom is so tiny as to be microscopic, I'm sure -- is Nest, written for vanillafluffy and based on The Flight of the Doves by Walter Macken. The book was fairly popular when it came out, to the point that they made a rather cheesy movie of it starring Jack Wild and Ron Moody of Oliver! fame, but that was long long ago. I love the book dearly, though, so when the request came up among the pinch hits, I grabbed with both hands. And vanillafluffy likes it, so I am well paid.
I stockpiled some short pieces for Yuletide Madness, and then wrote a bunch more when the full list of prompts became available.
The droubbles (200 words) are:
Winter Meeting for ananas who wanted The Deed of Paksenarrion - Elizabeth Moon, with Aliam Halveric and Kieri Phelan.
Conversation for imaginarycircus who wanted Lord Peter Wimsey - Dorothy L. Sayers and a Harriet/Bunter/Peter threesome. I didn't quite manage that, but I implied slashy things in a conversation set just after Busman's Honeymoon.
Complementary for Steelneko who wanted The Princess and the Frog (2009) with Tiana and Naveen. I wrote a fluffy piece about Tiana looking at Naveen and seeing one of his best qualities and thoroughly enjoyed myself.
The sesquidrabbles (150 words) are:
Finding God for Nemo the Everbeing who wanted MASH (TV) pairing Father Mulcahy and Hawkeye. A pair I couldn't see and couldn't see and couldn't see and suddenly did -- sort of.
What DO you get a hologram for Christmas? (When he already has a comb?) for ashcat who wanted Quantum Leap with Sam and Al caring for each other. I had tremendous fun with this one, inspiration having landed on my ears from my excessive collection of Christmas music.
Wild Wish for sistermagpie, who mentioned liking Jane and Will together in her request for The Dark is Rising - Susan Cooper. But all I could see was what would have to come first. I loved writing this one very much.
Unintended Lesson for a girl_called_sun in Bedknobs and Broomsticks (1971) takes a peek at Eglantine upon the receipt of a very life-changing package. Another one that had me grinning as I typed!
Small Sister for kotturinn who wanted more about the Sowerby family from Secret Garden - Frances Hodgson Burnett and made me wonder too.
And, of course, the proper drabbles:
In Contention for VanaTuivana who wanted Alpha Flight
and Jean-Paul Beaubier (Northstar). I stole inspiration for this one from a nevertobefinished WIP I did with Jinx long ago and a conversation about what the Olympics are really like.
Court of Appeal for psocoptera who wanted Marvin the Martian/Michigan J Frog from Looney Tunes | Merrie Melodies and then provided a link to the canon evidence and made me giggle so hard I couldn't resist. Another Froggy Evening indeed!
Look Ahead for stuffwelike has Hannibal Heyes from Alias Smith and Jones doing a bit of thinking. I did love that show.
Danse Solitaire for astolat who wanted Cotillion - Georgette Heyer
is another contemplative piece, but it's Jack Westruther doing the thinking this time.
Hungry for Parhelion who wanted Nero Wolfe - Rex Stout is set just a bit before the books start.
And Afterwards for Caitrin Torres who wanted a story set after All Summer in a Day - Ray Bradbury. This is the only one where I'd throw up spoiler warnings. Read Bradbury first. Get traumatized like all of us who read that story as children. Then read the drabble. But only if you like angst.
Whew.... No wonder I'm tired!
