When I had pnumonia my temperature would spike (and cool) at downright predictable times of day. IIRC it always cooled off a bit around noon and shot sky high in the early evening. Would be down a bit by morning and then climb until about midmorning.
I gather that fevers often do cycle like that if they don't break and just taper off.
