rabidsamfanIn the end, the verdict seemed an anticlimax. I felt more relief at Wiggins' exoneration than my own. I felt as if I had cheated, although the exasperation and disdain with which Collins was bestowed by his fellow jurors lent credence to the supposition that most of the panel had not required persuasion on my behalf.
The judge took the jury's decision with less-than grace, describing it as perverse even as he admitted that he lacked cause to override it. "Get out of my courtroom," he ordered me sullenly, a command I intended to obey.
