Thank you so much for putting this link here. I really enjoyed that. I love the pentatonic scale--the japanese koto is tuned to that, and I took koto lessons for several years, and it always felt so natural.

It is cool isn't it? I've just spent an hour watching more of the discussion.

That's so cool -- I've always loved Bobby McFerrin and how he can demonstrate things like that with an audience.

Thanks for posting this!

He's amazing. There's a youtube clip of him doing something similar in montreal.

THAT.WAS.AWESOME!

I am now fortifying myself with ice cream to go listen to your Wagner. It is a daunting prospect, voluntarily seeking out Wagner, but as I trust you with my fic I suppose I can do as much with my eardrums ;)

And misinterpreted your comment last night in the late hours and thought you were sending me actual recordings of Wagner. But I'm loving them!

Ice cream is always a good thing to build a fortress out of... er... at least... well, maybe it it's really *cold* out there.

That man is pure genius. I once saw him conduct some Mozart sinfonia with an European youth orchestra, and I watched his face and the faces of those young musicians und suddenly felt as if listening to this very familiar piece of classic for the first time in my life - absolutely fresh, humorous, enthustastic and brilliant.

Oooh, that sounds like fun.

I sat and watched the whole discussion, and McFerrin made his points more effectively than any of those teachers and writers on stage. (Not that they didn't make some good points, but they were cloaked in jargon.) Made me want to go see him in concert someday.

Ain't it though? There's a youtube clip of him playing an audience in Montreal in a similar way, but its all improv so of course its different too.

Wow! I'm going to have to watch the whole lecture. I'd LOVE to know what they have to say about neurons...

(insulin because I don't have pictures of neurons or notes, heh)
