rabidsamfan: samwise gamgee, I must see it through (Default)

My furnace is not working properly. It's sixty degrees F (15.5C) in my apartment and has been since yesterday morning. Seeing as how this is the week that winter finally decided to show up in Boston, and my windows leak, it's not been the best of mornings. But I'm skipping work to wait for the plumber, and I have DVDs and hot chocolate, so I will survive.

Wrote a drabble for one of [livejournal.com profile] surgicalsteel's characters. It's over here.

Man, I miss writing drabbles. Here's hoping inspiration will nudge me again.

Exile

I'm not Serindë, all right?

I know that. I've known it most of my life. I'm not as smart as she is, I'm not as brave as she is, I'm not loved like she is...

I'm stuck in the armpit of nowhere, all because of a man who isn't even sharing my bed anymore, with everyone watching me and waiting for me to fuck up because I'm not Serindë. Even if I could wear her shoes, which I can't, they'd never fit. And you know the worst of it?

She's got the only damn shoulder I want to cry on.

Didn't you hear the united shout of joy? *grins* My dear, that was a classic. Still killing the audience with your last sentences, are you? *hands you a kettle of hot water, sugar free Swiss Miss (very tasty, believe it or not) and a pile of blankets*

Well, Yalie kept tapping my shoulder, saying "they don't understand..." and I had to fire up the old computer and say so. This was one of the rare drabbles that hit 100 words exactly on the first try, too.

How are you, by the way? I was looking at the weather reports and it sounds like it's messy over there, too.

The storm gets frightening meanwhile. Our WW-meeting was canceled because many of the women refuse to leave their houses (and they are right, you should definitely stay at home today).

But we have been spared of too much damage... at least yet.

The worst thing about some kinds of storm are how long they lasts. Stuff which wouldn't shake loose in a short thunderstorm can't take hours and hours of continuous battering. So here's hoping that the weather system will move on and let you get some rest soon! (And that your power stays on, too!)

Did you see it's supposed to snow tomorrow? At least up here - they're saying 1-3 inches in Nashua and up to 6 in Manchester.

Lovely drabble. Everyone loves it. You are the queen of drabbles, my dear.

Thanks for posting it. I can never remember how to make the double dots -- is that an umlaut? -- over the e, anyway. I sat reading the comments and mooning over them earlier while I was waiting for the landlady to call back, and it brightened my morning considerably.

I've trained Word to automatically add the umlaut to her name and Yalie's and Tarie's - I type in Word and copy and paste. I still use html for the strikeout and underline and bold and italics - but for the special characters, I let Word do it for me.

It's always so wonderful to see a RSF drabble!

Methinks it's time for a down comforter, or fleece pajamas, or both.

I have a purple, be-sheeped chunk of polar fleece that only is allowed to be called a blanket because it's the right size and shape for one, and it is keeping me lovely and cosy, thanks.

My sympathies on the heater problems. It's in the low 50s here in So. Cal., and my heater went out last night as well. 58 degrees in the apt. this morning with no chance to warm it up! No wonder I couldn't make myself get out of bed....

Oh, you have my absolute sympathy. The worst of it for me was that I'd had a fit of night sweats, so when I first woke up not only was the apartment freezing but my pajamas were soaked. Not conducive to getting out of bed, no my precious, not at all!

It could be worse. I have a little electric heater that compensates in the bedroom. And I'm cleaning -- that always warms me up!

But I'd like it fixed before I go to bed tonight.

Well, I'm all iced in in my very first winter here, and seeing your drabble was a wonderful bit of warmth!

You just really *nailed* Yalie! Of course you *always* do nail the characters, and devestatingly so--I really miss your drabbles!

Choosing between ice storms and hurricanes... now that's hard.

Thanks for the vote of confidence on the drabble. I read the last bit [livejournal.com profile] surgicalsteel had posted and it seemed like most of the people commenting wanted to give her a good swift shaking... but there's got to be something there besides mere competence or Serinde wouldn't have trusted her so much during the battle. I've got the feeling most of the healers are "walking wounded", actually -- including Serinde and Yalie -- but Yalie's way of dealing with it might have worked out better if she'd picked someone besides Thalguron!

I agree entirely with your assessment of Yalie, BTW, and the fact that most of the healers are 'walking wounded' themselves.

Long time reader, too-long-since-commenter here. If you're serious about writing more drabbles, I highly recommend getting a word-a-day email from an online dictionary. The major ones I know of:

http://www.m-w.com/word/subscribe.htm
http://www.oed.com/services/email-wotd.html
http://dictionary.reference.com/wordoftheday/list/

I signed up for one a while ago. They won't always inspire, but sometimes they focus your thinking enough to give you that necessary kick.

I hope your furnace will start working again too! I do not want a sick RSF!
And that's great you're drabbling again. :)
