Norbury

When the Queen had gone to her rest, and all the attendants were free to do the same, Elanor climbed up the tower to the window where she could look back along the road that her sisters and brothers and mother and father had taken home a week ago. “It’s an honor,” she reminded herself, “And I gave my word.” But the silken gown and her place at the Queen’s side were no comfort against loneliness.

A scrape of leather against stone turned her head, and she would have fallen from the sill trying to curtsey had not the King caught her and set her upright again. “It is too late to be formal,” he said, “and I came only to thank you for staying. You are young to be parted from your family.”

“Yes,” she sighed, “And Frodo-lad’s not nearly as good at making the little ones behave as I am.” She took the seedy cake the Man offered from his pocket absently, frowning again at the road outside the window. “I hope they’re all right.”

“They are,” Elessar assured her, taking a seat on the other end of the windowsill.

She brightened. “Of course! You have the palantir. The one that Pippin… Uncle Peregrin, I mean, looked into!”

“Do you know of that?” the King asked, curiously.

“Of course I do. Sam-dad’s read me the Red Book three times through. It has the whole story. Or at least, all the parts that Frodo knew to put into it. And Bilbo’s story first, of course, about the dragon, which is very exciting, but I like the parts with Sam-dad in them best. And Frodo of the Ring.” Elanor tried to think of a polite way to ask what she was thinking, but couldn’t. “Did Frodo really act that silly when you first met him in Bree? And did Sam-dad really want to send you away? And did hobbits look as small to you as you look big to us? And have you a book too? That tells the story the way that Men saw it?”

And now the King laughed, but it was a kindly laughter. “No book, not yet. But eat your cake and I will tell you what I remember.”

And Elanor forgot about her loneliness and settled back to listen.

Wow, what an interesting thought! I'd never thought of looking at the events and characters through Elanor's eyes. I bet her perceptions of Frodo would reveal a lot about Sam's near-worship of him. *Has Elanor bunny now, LOL!*

Oh, feed that bunny, please, I'd love to see what you make of it!

Thanks!

Wow. Um, yee, wow.

I had the same plotbunny. I was wondering when I'd find time to write it. I don't have to, now.

(So I'll spend more time working om Faramir and Merry's chat. :)

HMmm. Delighted over the working on Faramir and Merry news; dismayed that I might have pre-empted your contemplations on the other bunny. Please, do write it if you find the time and inclination. I love the way you see hobbits!

Thanks!

Wonderful! Oh how I could settle back to listen to the King tell the story, as well! If you're ever inspired to continue this, I'd love to know the King's thoughts about this little lass after Elanor had gone to bed. What does he think about Sam's family, and the new generation of Shire dwellers? What does he (or Arwen) think of Elanor's beauty?

:)

Well, considering that this bunny started out completely different, there may be some more of Elanor to come. I don't know yet.

Glad you enjoyed this bit, though! Thanks!

Aragorn should write his own version of the Red Book. Ah, it's cute that Elanor also called his uncle 'Pippin'.

Wouldn't that be interesting? Or is he too busy being King, I wonder?

Thanks!

Oh, lovely! I can just see Elanor settling in to listen as Aragorn tells her the tale from his POV. I second [livejournal.com profile] shirebound, that you should write more if you feel so inclined. :)

The great king, taking time to reassure a homesick child. Wonderful!

This is lovely. Thanks for posting it!

Aragorn is very conscientious about taking care of the people in his care, I think. And hobbits always like a bit of food, right?

Thanks!

Oh, Aragorn is so nice to homesick!Elanor. And it's cute to see Elanor resembling her father so much in the down-to-earth and curious department.

This is so sweet and beautiful, and I like the way Aragorn helps Elanor to overcome her homesickness! Is this perhaps part of a...hm... bigger story?

*looks hopeful*

BTW - this reminds me of a part of the second epilogue of Pretty Good Year ("East of the Sun") where Mary describes an encounter between Elanor and Arwen. Did you ever read that?

Glad you liked it though. Thanks!

I would love a longer version! And I mentioned Mary's PGY-scene because it had the same warm and thoughtful quality as yours. Besides, I love your Elanor, too, and very much.

1. THANK YOU for having the whole family along that year away.
2. What a lovely conversation between Elanor and the King. "Did Sam-dad really want to send you away?"
("and did he really perpetrate the first walk-by fruiting in Bree?")

What a lovely thought! Think about all she'll be learning. And wouldn't it be something to settle back and hear stories from the king. Wonderful job, dear.

Well, someone in the Shire is going to have to become fluent in Elvish, if the messages from Gondor are coming that way -- and I think she's the best candidate, don't you?

But it would be lonely after all those brothers and sisters.

Thanks!

How nice of Aragorn. He is one amazing king, isn't he? And I, like some others, wouldn't mind seeing more of this story if you ever get the time and inclination. :)
