Last Day in Denver!
Jan. 10th, 2009 11:42 pmI fly back to Boston tomorrow, and I don't wanna go... can't I win the lottery? Work on Monday doesn't sound any fun at all.
But today was fun. We went to the opening day of the National Western Stock Show and Rodeo, and wandered the exhibit halls and then finished the day with Mexican Extravaganza Rodeo. Lots of equestrian skills, and rope handling as well as the usual bareback riding and bull riding. My 84-year-old-mother actually made it up to the seats I thought would be close, and were the last row before the top...
Best act was the rodeo clown. The theme was passing the torch to a new generation, so he brought out his son -- who can't be more than two -- in matching gear and with a little bitty barrel -- and then they took on a "bull" together. (A little bitty dachsund.) The squee factor was amazing.
My nephew liked that, and the bull who jumped the fence (fortunately into the extra area at the end of the arena) as well as the mutton busters.
A good end to a good day, and, alas, to a good vacation. That's one of the things I actually planned to do accomplished anyway!

Date: 2009-01-11 04:24 pm (UTC)When I was about 10, our family went to a rodeo in Florida. A Brahma bull jumped the fence in the stands right near where we were sitting. I never knew my parents could move so fast. My mother had my little brother, and my daddy just grabbed my sister and me each by one arm and up the stands we went. I had a bruise on my arm afterwards--but it beat getting gored!
Fortunately the rodeo people were able to get him out before anyone was seriously hurt.
