Obama voted to pass the FISA bill WITH the telecomm immunity provision intact. Move on wants him to promise he'll investigate when he's president. I say feh. He already promised he wouldn't vote for telecomm immunity and THAT's gone down the tubes.

I'm switching my voter registration to the Greens. At least Cynthia McKinney understands that I'd rather live with the threat of a possible terrorist attack once every few years than without my civil liberties every single morning of my life.

If the Democrats want to prove that they'll hold any president responsible for his duty to the constitution, they need to get impeachment out of committee and on the debating floor.

Actions speak louder than words.

ETA I'm not committed to voting for McKinney, or anyone else. I'm just sick and tired of the Democrat leadership saying "oh, sure, Bush has violated the Constitution but we're not going to hold him responsible for it because we have to look like we're tough on terrorism."

Impeachment. On the table. I do have other choices.

What value does a politician's promise have? Good for you.

I completely sympathize with your position, but I should warn you that C. McKinney was my Congresswoman for entirely too many years, and that lady is COMPLETELY BATSHIT INSANE. (Her father, also a long-term politician, is worse.) She's well known for playing the racist/prejudice card whenever things don't go her way; she typically blurts out the first thing that comes into her head when confronted and then spends weeks on damage control; and she would be extremely ineffective as Chief Executive simply because she managed to lose the respect of nearly all her fellow Congresspersons when she was in Washington with her radical, self-serving tactics. I don't normally get into political discussions, but I PROMISE you that Cynthia McKinney is a giant fraud.

Might I suggest that you look into the Libertarian Party if you're interested in Civil Liberties? Most Libertarians are STRICT Constitutionalists. The current candidate is a former Republican Congressman (curiously enough, also from Georgia, like McKinney), but he's had it with the erosion of Constitutional rights perpetrated by the current administration. (This, BTW, is NOT an endorsement of him; I have my issues with him as well, but I just think his position *might* appeal to you if you want to investigate.) The section of his website that addresses personal freedoms is here if you want to check it out.

Georgia hasn't had this much political excitement since Jimmy Carter, I have to say. ;-)

Oh, I'm not committed to voting any particular way -- but the only thing that the Democrats are likely to notice as "real" is a loss of voters who are registered with them. And the Greens are closer to my positions than the Libertarians on several issues (I do like the libertarians on some things.)

In other words, I'm taking action, because words haven't been enough. I've been warning the democratic party that they can't rely on my vote without some real action on this front and for their putative nominee to make a gaffe this huge is just the last straw.

Frankly, anyone would be better than Obama. He scares the crap out of me. (Pardon my language.) I'm seriously considering voting Libertarian myself.

he doesn't scare me. McCain, yeah, he's scary. But I'm tired of the idea the Presidents should be able to pull crap that's unconstitutional and then get a free pass.

I do agree with you that I am deeply disappointed in Senator Obama on his vote on this one. But I think it's still important not to have another Republican president this fall, and I've heard some of the same things of Ms. McKinney that [livejournal.com profile] elycia mentioned. And no, I'm not willing to vote Libertarian, not until the day I switch my demographics.

I debated commenting, especially considering the tenor of the previous comments (a couple of which I had to restrain myself from replying to), and I don't want to be unpleasant, but I felt this was too important not to say something.

It's okay. Voting is something I really think is up to individual conscience. And I'll make my final decision about who I pull the lever for (if anyone) come November. I'm switching registration of party membership as a protest, tho.

I'm frankly just relieved they passed the Medicare Improvements for Patients and Providers Act finally. Silly people refused to vote for cloture on the thing, meaning the vote got pushed back into July - with a 10.6% pay cut to providers scheduled to take effect July 1st.

*eyeroll* Politicians. Can't live with 'em, and there's too many of 'em to conveniently hide the bodies.

To shy away from an impeachment is simply wrong - whether because of showing your "patriot muscles" or because of "Bush's leaving anyway". Both reasons are a poor make up for democratic cowardice. Fact is: the current President has lied at his people, begun a war for non-existent reasons (weapons no one did buy and no one was able to find because they simply weren't there) and has laid the "Land of the Free" practically in chains by twisting the laws and using fear, racism and hate as an unholy weapon.

Starting an impeachment would show the Americans (and the world) that there are still politicians with a backbone. Your constitution has been besmirched and turned upside down. An Impeachment would be a sign that Politicians still respect Democracy and understand that patriotism has nothing to do with hating others and using the flag to cover their misdeeds.
