I had a couple of hotmail accounts. Hadn't checked them lately, but today I had time. I've been upgraded to "Live" Hotmail. All of my messages... every single one, from about six years worth of e-mail, are gone. The contacts are there for the second account, but nothing else.

Well, to be fair, it may be that the accounts had gone idle because I hadn't signed in for a while. But that doesn't explain why the contacts still exist and the messages are gone.

I think I'll stick to gmail now.

I tend to type 'keywords' into Google and see what happens. In this case: hotmail live messages

A lot of my job has to do with internet research, and finding hard-to-locate scientists' contact information. I guess I've learned how to refine a search out of necessity!

I do a lot of that sort of thing too - but it didn't occur to me to try googling when I had a "help" right in front of me.

Do you do much delving in the "deep" internet?

Databases that Google etc. don't search. Your local public library probably has a bunch of them linked. I know the BPL does. A lot of them are not free, but some are, if you only know how to get there. Library catalogs, for example, are usually considered "deep" -- if you search for a book, you get Amazon, not me.

Not even "Who's Who" online? I'll betcha that you could find some info faster if you were right in the correct place to look.

Here's a link to a list of the databases that the BPL covers, for example. You need a BPL card to use them (email me at rabidsamfan @ gmail if you want more info) but your local public library should have something similar you can use with your card there.

Thanks. I'm still ripping, because I know for certain that I'd had gaps of more than thirty days signing in without losing my e-mails before, but I suppose it's sort of nice to know that I'm not the only person who's lost a whacking great chunk of their life.

I always steer people away from Hotmail. They were my first email service, and I got so frigging sick of clearing out over 100 spam emails a day that I abandoned my boxes there. I tell people to use Yahoo now. They have unlimited storage, spam and virus filters, and they don't fuck with your stuff the way Microsoft does.
