even when I deserve it.

My upstairs neighbor is angry because he's ended up doing most of the maintenance in the building. It's condos, and he's not paid for it, but no one has defined whose job is what.

There are a bunch of boxes in the basement to go out which are mine, and I haven't done it, because I've pretty much felt like hell for the month they've been there. I heard him in the hall and poked my nose out to say that I was confident I'd be able to do it on Monday and he yelled. He doesn't want to talk to me any more.

*sigh*

I wrote him a note, apologizing, but I don't think he'll read it. It's frustrating though. I see his point entirely, but I've just not been in a place where I've cared about the hallway or the basement enough to do anything about them.

Isn't there a condo association? Usually they decide who does what and what the condo dues pay for. I don't blame him for being upset if he has ended up stuck with most of the work and no pay! :( But obviously you have been in no shape to do it yourself.

Not a formal one, as near as I can tell. There are only four apartments in the entire building anyway. The second floor is absentee most of the time, I rent the first floor from the gal who inherited it when her mother died, and the fourth floor just got sold to a new guy. So the guy on the third floor has the most time and money invested in the place...

I'm going to see if I can coax a couple of friends into helping me out this weekend. But damn, those stairs have been giving me vertigo this past month -- I haven't even liked going down to do laundry!

Man, it seems that if he's been upset that he should have let you know before he got to the point of yelling. :-( I hope it gets resolved soon! *hugs*

Yeah, well he probably would have just fumed if I hadn't opened the door to talk to him. He's usually pretty reasonable. Oh, well. I'm going to talk to my landlady and suggest that we have an owners/renter's meeting to resolve things, because it really isn't a fair situation right now.

He may be right in one sense, but you've had good reason not to do it and he ought to calm down long enough to understand that. Small condos are the very worst for this sort of conflict.

Thing is, he knows about the cancer. But it's also the middle of his "night" right now.

Oh, well, all I can hope is that it will blow over.

He could have told you earlier before yelling.

I hope he'll get over it soon.

He'd mentioned the boxes before. I actually opened the door to try to explain to him why I was delayed.

You know, really, even if you do think that you are to blame for not dealing with your boxes, he still shouldn't have yelled.

I'm sorry, but it's just rude; I don't care how angry a person is at someone. He owes you an apology.

*bristles on your behalf*

*whispers* What's a condo?

And I'm sorry you got yelled at, I usually feel the same way when it happens to me.

Condominium. In this case, perfectly reasonable apartments that got sold separately so the owners of the building made more money than they would have if they'd sold the whole building at once.

Thank you! I'd seen the word around before, but only got as far as working out that it's a place you can live.

They got really big in the eighties with properties that were built specifically to be sold that way. You pay not-quite-as-much as you would for a house to get a place that's tiny, and then pay fees that are nearly-as-much-as-rent in perpetuity so that someone else mows the non-existant lawn. Well, actually the fees cover the insurance and stuff too, but they're mostly maintenance fees.

Once the real estate people saw how much money the condo folks were making they started taking apartment buildings, refurbishing them so that the heat and hot water, etc., no longer came through a single unit (which is damn ineffecient, energywise) and then selling the apartments as condos. The usual effect of which is to put the poorer tenants out on the street because they could manage to pay rent, but didn't have enough savings for the downpayment on the places where they'd been living for twenty years and more.

Ironically, at least half the condos in Boston are occupied by renters who lost their old apartments to condo-conversion. And they're paying twice as much rent! Gotta cover those condo fees somehow you know...

Try to get some help; of course you weren't able to do anything about those boxes; you had some other problems, hadn't you?

Yeah. I feel like I should copy the paper that says that I have to hold onto anything I handle and not put it in the trash for two weeks and plaster it on his door...

At least I'm getting past being depressed by the mess and moving onto pissed off. Right?

I agree. Feeling pissed off is much better than being depressed. *grins* And I'll put some balm on your sore nerves next week by poating chapter two.

Well, gee whiz, RSF, you shoulda moved those boxes despite the fact you've had a major medical crisis! (glowers at fussbudget tenant) You don't owe him an apology, he owes YOU one for being such an insensitive jerk. But that's just MHO because I don't like to see any friend picked on. ((hugs))

Thanks. My landlady called me last night and she agrees with me that the condo owners need to define who is responsible for what -- possibly pay ThirdFloorMan for the work or hire a service for cleaning the general areas so that it gets done on a regular basis out of the condo fees. She definitely thinks that cleaning the hall is Not my responsibility because I'm only a tenant, and not an owner, and I find that reassuring. She also understands about the boxes. She'll give him a couple of days to cool off and then call to talk to him.

Well, he has no reason to get upset if it's not anybody's job to do it... no one told HIM to go do the maintenance! And really, he should be more sensitive to your health issues, since you said he knew what was going on.

It's a basement... he's getting way too upset about a BASEMENT, for goodness' sakes.
