I've been reading a lot of [livejournal.com profile] surgicalsteel's series about a surgeon from Minas Tirith and one of the most recent postings actually got me drabbling late last night.

If you haven't stumbled across Serinde (whose "e" has the double dots I don't know how to make in html) and you're interested, the timeline is here.

And if you already know her, this is set early in her exile.

It had never occurred to her that there was an art to be learned in loading a packhorse. She’d had help from the camp followers in Ithilien, Rangers-to-be or fighters-who-had-been whose tasks had included caring for the animals and maintaining the supplies. She could bundle her tools and her medicinal salves for her needs, and let others worry about distributing the weight evenly for carrying. But her bundles hadn’t included books then, or food.

She sighed and treated the saddle gall with an ointment she would rather have preserved for later. This patient wouldn’t be paying her in coin either.

Beautiful, RBS! I've bookmarked her Serinde list. Cheers.

It's fun reading. I sort of started by glancing and very quickly got hooked. And there's a couple of good Sam h/c bits in both timelines. *waggles eyebrows* (Although I am rather fond of the AU, where Gandalf nearly gets his beard removed...)

Um. I don't know how to do the e-umlaut in HTML either. I type in Word (where it's easy to insert special characters) and then copy and paste. ;)

I adore this so much!

Rich text entries invariably have more clutter than I want, so I usually just type in all the html for italics and bolds etc. And if I got ambitious I could look up the html, I just haven't got ambitious...

*grins at the bouncing*

Oh, I do that, too. It's just the special characters - the e-umlaut, the vowels with the accent mark over them, the little pointy thing over the 'u' in Nazgul - those, I use Word's 'insert special character' feature, and it copies faithfully.

special characters

The HTML codes for vowels with diacritics work like this
(omit spaces and change V to the vowel you want):
diaresis/umlaut is & V uml;
acute accent is & V acute;
grave accent is & V grave;

It works with either lowercase or uppercase letters.
See how useful it is to know a langage geek?

Wonderful to see you writing again! Serinde is truly a marvelous character, and I've only read a little of her world so far.

Poor horse! He and Serinde are going to have a time together aren't they?

*giggle* And isn't the addendum (http://surgsteelfic.livejournal.com/21292.html) that [livejournal.com profile] gloryunderhill wrote in the fic journal a kick in the head?
