The president wants to sell off a lot of the public lands, forest lands, and has put together a list that includes well-loved sites and lots of errors.

The comment period goes to May 1st, so write to

USDA Forest Service
SRS comments
Lands 4S
1400 Independence Ave., SW
Mailstop 1124
Washington, D.C., 20250-0030.

Or e-mail srs_land_sales@fs.fed.us.

The land sale is theoretically going to help rural schools -- except that it won't. Schools, like most other agencies, need reliable steady funding, not onetime gluts that vanish the following year. The people who really would benefit from this would be the folks who have enough money to buy up the land and they won't be sharing it once they have it. My sister lives in Colorado and she points out that many of these parcels are not the "crown jewels" of the forestlands -- but they're critical links in the way that we get to those crown jewels.

This is a stupid idea, thrown together without any real consideration of each individual parcel. It needs to be stopped.

Looks like there's something political that we finally agree on: private land is private. I just sent an email off saying just that. Thanks for sharing.

Honestly. The sheer dangerously stupid incompetence in this administration knows no bounds.

Thank you!

Our public lands seem to this administration to be more corporate lands as Bush gives away grazing rights, mining rights, oil exploitation rights, etc. The shortsightedness is astonishing.
