He fell, birthblind, and lay still, listening to the stars wheel endlessly above him as the long bones grew. After a time he could see one hand: first pink and small, then graceful and white for scarcely a moment before the familiar wrinkles filled themselves in like ink-scratches on an unfinished drawing. In a distant way he remembered his task, unfinished, and the death that had interrupted his quest.

Why had he been sent back here, to cold stone and snow, and not to the warm Elven groves below the mountain?

There!

A glint of gold, a ruby bright.

Narya.

*shiver* Ooh, so lovely! I'm listening to Loreena McKennit (Night Ride Across the Caucasus), and just came across this. Oh, my! Lovely!

Oooh, lovely! And what a unique and lovely idea for a drabble! I think that might be the first drabble I've ever read on the subject of Gandalf returning! Thankyou!!

BRAVO!!

Indeed... an interesting and very characteristic question to ask.

Absolutely amazing.

That's brilliant, that is! I have read very little based on Gandalf's return from...well, wherever.

And, uh, yeah--I can imagine him wondering why, if they went to the trouble of bringing him back, they didn't just plop him down in Lorien to begin with.

But Narya could have kept him warm until Gwaihir showed up.

I really loved that, especially "Why had he been sent back here, to cold stone and snow, and not to the warm Elven groves below the mountain?". It highlights an interesting question.

DAMN. This one is really a stunner, hon. Interesting, and in a way a bit sad, that his first really clear realization would be one of such awesome responsibility. You are just SOOO good at this!
