We’re on our way north again, at last, and it feels strange to have the sun shining on the right side of my face of a morning, after all that long journey south. Mr. Merry, he can’t seem to stop telling folks about the Brandywine, and Mr. Pippin’s fretting that he’ll miss his mam’s summer pies, and me, I just keep talking about my Gaffer, and wondering how he’s managed the digging alone. But I don’t think you’ve said two words about Bag End. Nor Crickhollow neither. But I know you’re homesick too.

Tell me again about Rivendell and Bilbo.

[livejournal.com profile] miralira, this one is for you.

Aaww...poor Frodo. And of course, observant Sam.

I've often thought of the fact that of the four hobbits, only Frodo had no one "special" left behind in the Shire--no parents, no siblings, no sweethearts. Those he loved most dearly had come with him. It must have been both a great comfort and a fearful burden.

But you take it one step further--Bilbo, who awaits him in Rivendell, and dwells among the Elves, is his "someone special". Perhaps we see here one more reason, besides his need for healing, for his passage to the West.

I love the way you make me think.

Thank you. I love thinking about them too -- it's amazing what comes to mind when you let the book fall open to a favorite passage.

Of course, anymore, my copy falls open at random...

How utterly beautiful, and so very, very Sam. How I missed your drabbles!

This has a sad tone to it. Frodo has no one awaiting him in the Shire for all he loved went with him. Except for Bilbo, of course. Dear Sam, always managing to cheer him up.

Well, there's Fatty and Folco, of course. But I think Frodo's heart is with Bilbo.

Oooohhhh! This kills me! That Sam notices Frodo silence and his understanding that home, for Frodo, is not merely a place, but a sanctuary of the heart (Bilbo) and the mind (Rivendell) is simply brilliant, and so, so Sam. What an image you put in my mind. Thank you so much for this.

Ah, I'm glad you enjoyed it. *revives you hastily*

I never quite know what Sam is going to tell me when I start writing. Sometimes I'm surprised too!

GORGEOUS. What a gentle way for Sam to bring Frodo out of his solitude and back to them. You never fail to amaze me, truly.
