Mary wouldn't let me hand her up into it, and Stamford did the office for me. Once we were on our way, the two of them combined to make me remove my coat and shirt, so that Stamford could examine and treat my injuries by the light of the first convenient street lamp we stopped alongside on a quiet street. Distantly I could hear the newsboys shouting out the latest headline. "Watson goes free!"
